Shiretoko Goko (Five Lakes)

Shiretoko Goko (Five Lakes) Review

Twenty minutes uphill from Utoro by car—and on every tour bus route in the region—a collection of small lakes hides in the forest on a precipice above the ocean. It takes just over an hour to walk round all five lakes on boardwalk paths. Most tour groups only reach the first two, and the others are sometimes closed due to the presence of bears. The lakes are pretty reflecting pools for the mountains, but crowds do disturb the idyll a bit, so plan on doing all five if you have the time.
