Districts around the major gardens and temples teem with silk shops and outdoor markets. The city's long history of wealth and culture has encouraged a tradition of elegant and finely worked craft objects. One of the best known is double-sided embroidery, where two designs are carefully stitched on both sides of a sheet of silk. The city is also famous for its finely latticed sandalwood fans. Both are available at the Suzhou Arts and Crafts Museum. The area outside the west gate of the Master of the Nets Garden has dozens of small stalls selling curios and inexpensive but interesting souvenirs.
