L'Escale des Arts & des Sens
L'Escale des Arts & des Sens Review
Siem Reap's dining scene raised several notches with the opening of this restaurant. Chef Didier Corlou, who hails from the Hotel Metropole in Hanoi, has a long, fine tradition of creating modern Indochinese culinary marvels. His menus are specific to the locale, which means you can try his favorite delights from the Tonle Sap, or beef prepared in seven ways (based on an old tiger recipe). You could return every night for a week and still not have sampled everything on offer.

There is a huge difference between the glowing reviews this establishment seems to have received and our experience on a weekend evening just before Christmas 2009.
The food arrived cold and was neither fresh nor appetising. It was very, very disappointing.
After only a few bites, we decided to quietly pay and go elsewhere but were then confronted by an extremely rude and aggressive manager who berated us in a very loud voice. At one point, we thought he was actually going to become violent. It really did have to be experienced to be believed; Basil Fawlty would have been proud.
I'm sure the glowing reviews were probably warranted when L'Escale first opened. Sadly, it would seem that in its current form, the shine has gone off this particular place.
Experience it at your own risk.
