wide beach on Cape with powdery sand & good for young children?

We are planning a Cape vacation and are looking for a wide beach with powdery sand (not pebbly) that is good for young children (3,5,7) - ie: waves not too big. Would also love bathrooms there too and parking. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your suggestions!

There are many beaches on the Cape that are wonderful for children. My first choice is Corporation beach in Dennis, It is in a small cove and the water gets warm. They have restrooms and concession stand, life guard in season. My next choice is Skaket beach in Orleans. It is wonderful for swimming during high tide and awesome during low tide to explore the tidal flats with the little ones. The sunsets on skaket will take your breath away. It is my personal favorite. Be sure to check parking regulations before you go. You can buy a sticker when you arrive in town. Cape Cod is a great vacation, enjoy!!

There are lots of wonderful beaches on the Cape. The ones on the Nantucket Sound side are warmer than those on the north side and gentler than the National Seashore.

But I don't know of any powdery beaches in the sense that Gulf beaches in Florida are powdery.

Sometimes beach and lodging decisions should be made at the same time - many Cape beaches are either "resident only" (which also means as a renter you can buy a sticker for the time you are there) or have limited or very expensive daily parking.

So if you have not made lodging decision yet, I would look at towns of Wellfleet and Dennis - at places where you are eligible for a beach sticker. Also, in general the beaches on the northern (bay) side of the Cape have calmer waters.

Unfortunately, the best sand on the Cape is at the National Seashore - but the waves are also the largest on the Cape and not what you are seeking with young kids.

Thank you everyone! We haven't made any lodging decisions yet - I was thinking we would decide which town after we figured out a great beach and hopefully we could rent a place in that town and purchase a sticker as a renter. I had heard that Corporation beach was voted one of the best so I will definitely check that out. I haven't seen too many listings yet on vrbo.com or cyberrentals.com for summer 2012 rentals. Not sure if I'm checking too early or if I already missed some already? I wonder when they get booked typically...
I remember visiting the Cape once where we went to a beach that was absolutely breathtaking. You came over these high dunes to the widest beach with the nicest sand. It was amazing! Wish I could remember where we were. It was so long ago! I'm going to try to find out...
Thank you again to you all. =)

Your childhood beach was undoubtedly contained in the National Seashore somewhere between Orleans and Provincetown. The waves there can be tremendous and the water is very cold. We swim (or our kids do, anyway) in wetsuits. They surf there too.

Nantucket Sound waters are the warmest but the beaches are very pebbly.

Cape Cod Bay waters are colder than Nantucket Sound beaches but they enjoy a tremendous low tide and you can walk out for quite a distance to explore. (the tide comes in quickly, be careful of going too far out or you'll be swimming into shore). There is very little surf at the Bay beaches. Skaket Beach ticks all your boxes.

I couldn't have been more wrong! Asked my sister-in-law, it was Cranes Beach in Ipswich! It was 10 years ago so I couldn't remember. =)
I really love the quaintness of the Cape though - walking to Ice Cream stores, very family oriented so we'll still be heading there this summer...

If you're still looking for a rental contact try Wilkinson Realty for properties in Orleans and other Bayside towns:

We always took our kids to Skaket Beach in Orleans or to one of the beaches on the Sound in Dennis, Yarmouth, Harwich. There are aldo mnay fresh water lakes and ponds on the Wcape, suchbas Pilgrim Lake in Orleans.

Often renting from a realty company is not significantly more expensive, as the owner pays a percentage of the rental to the company, not you. We have rented on the Cape both ways - individually and thru a realtor. It was convenient the one time we had a minor problem with a property, it was remedied immediately by a phone call to the realty company - so don't rule out renting that way.

Virtually all properties on Cape Cod rent from Sat afternoon - the following Sat AM.

We always use "weneedavacation" web site when looking for a place to rent on the Cape. We have used this site 3 times and had no problems at all, of course you have to use common sense and ask any questions that concern you. They also give what you need to get on the beach, some do this but not all. If I were you I would try to stay mid-cape so you are not that far from either lower or outer cape. We go off season so we beach hop, no traffic!! With so many lovley beaches it is hard to pick one. I would still spend at least one day at the National seashore, the kids can still enjoy the sand and getting there feet wet. My choice for a calm beach for you would be Skaket beach for sure.
