Where's to settle in Alaska
I have kids raised and burn't out with factory job. I would like any opinions on settling in Alaska. Cost of living and job situations matter alot. I still need a job as I am only 53. Any opinions???

I haven't been there in awhile, but lived in Anchorage for a time years ago. I loved it. There were the "city" amenities I crave, but the wilderness was just out the back door, so to speak. It's a tight-knit community and I enjoyed living there. The economy there was good - back then, anyway. The people were great.

Even though we absolutly loved Alaska to visit, we've heard the winters can be extremely brutal and very very dark, and the cost of living can be very,very expensive, especially housing. We were shocked how expensive even a little house could be!

Log onto www.adn.com, the Anchorage Daily News site, and look through the wantads. They will tell you lots. Cost of living is somewhat higher than the lower 48 in aggregate, as are wages. Employment is always an issue.
Many people come north looking for solutions to problems that they end up bringing with them. Are you happy in the cold and dark? Do you get cabin fever? Are you a Democrat? All are contraindicated.

In some areas such as Kenai/Soldotna some restaurants etc will close for the winter. A decent two bedroom apartment will be $800 and up. Some jobs are seasonal and some people are only there for the summer. People who work on the slope work schedules something like two weeks on/two weeks off. Distance from family may or may not bother you. When moving anyplace it helps if you have a hobby or interest that will help you make friends. Climate in Anchorage and KP isn't much different than the Northeast but in Fairbanks it's a lot colder in winter. Housing affordability might mean a long commute to a job in Anchorage. Good luck!

Consider Juneau. State capital. Very temperate climate for Alaska. When a friend lived there for a year it was often colder in Dallas or Atlanta than Juneau. Consider a short-term rental / house share situation (very common there) and "try out" Alaska while you go through this next life stage. If you like the change, then consider staying in Juneau or moving to colder Alaska climes.
The biggest complaint I've heard from folks in Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks is the sense of isolation - it's so far removed (which can be good and can be bad). Everything else is called "Outside". The really good news is that you can get cheap flights "Outside" including Hawaii -
