While I'm not sure that The Strasburg Inn fits your definition of "moderate", it's a lovely facility about five miles southeast of Lancaster. For more information check out its website at www.historicstrasburginn.com

No children. We plan to stay in the area for two nights. We like scenery, historical sights, back roads.
We've visited the Amish country of Indiana and Ohio. Love their food, furniture, crafts. Do you have any suggestions about "what to do? "Thanks

I second Strasbourg Inn. While there, get up nice and early and drive through the farm areas, you will see the boys plowing and the amish overalls on the clothes lines.
Also, drive over to Lititz, visit Euphrata restoration (sp?), see the shaker film in town, etc

I highly recommend the Churchtown Inn. It's surrounded by beautiful views of the farmland and almost any time of the day, you can see buggies going by the front of the Inn. The rooms are beautiful, breakfast is out of this world (it's in this great glass-enclosed garden room), the innkeepers are super friendly. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, you can also eat dinner with Amish people and take carriage rides right from the Inn.

The town of Intercourse is worth a visit if for no other reason to buy a postcard to send to the folks back home. It's almost sinful fun to say with a perfectly straight face "Well, yes, we did that summer trip to Intercourse..." Very shocking!
All jokes aside, it is a charming little Amish town which has an unfortunate double-entendre attached to it. Euphrata Cloisters is also well worth a visit, and in Lilitz (sp?) you will find the pretzel factory which offers tours. Years ago we also took the train ride through Strasburg.

We stayed in Lititz at the General Sutter Inn for 105.00 a night in late June. The inn is downtown but it was very nice with shops and dining nearby.
I thought the Amish farm country was the one of the most eye-pleasing regions I have ever visited. The farms are so well kept and I think fewer power lines add to the effect.
Try to get to downtown Lancaster and the Farmers market on Fridays and Saturdays.
I found the whole area to be a odd mix of commercialism and genuine Amish culture.

We stayed at the Swiss Woods in Linitz a few years ago and were delighted in every way. Debbie the innkeeper is a Mennonite woman who knows the inn/outs of the area - she is well known for her culinary skills so you can imagine the cuisine.
I was very disappointed in the changes that have come to the area, aside from outlet malls, and trash sites, so, Swiss Woods is a beautiful respite, any season.
Our room overlooked the lake, the wood work (done by Debbie's husband) was beautiful, and the collection of guest, very exciting. Aside from travelers, it is "the" place to be received if you are a local resident and celebrating a special event ie: anniversary, birthday - so you'll come across a wealth of local insite!
PS: Judy, whenever I am looking for a bed and breakfast - the www.bedandbreakfast.com site, always comes through - it is recommended often on this site, if you go to the "community": section, you can ask and respond to others, for personal insite -- also the web facilitators (Rose & Sandy) at providing feedack!

We like the Best Western Revere Inn & Suites. Make sure you request the new building. We stayed in a small suite that included a living room area for $80 a night. Also has decent indoor pool if you have bad weather. Very nice and located in a the town of Paradise.
