where to stay in bristol county, ma and RI

My husband and I are planning a weekend getaway the first week of November. Looking to be in the bristol county region of ma and close to Newport...we are very familiar with Newport so would like to try something new and stay in Bristol County...any suggestions on nice whale/fishing town with a nice hotel to stay at with easy access to Newport (saw not good input on New Bedford from Boards)...would Martha's vineyard be to difficult to get back to main land and it's off season now right.....any suggestions would be great..thanks, amy

Martha's Vineyard and Newport in one weekend would be too rushed. I wouldn't recommend New Bedford either (even though it is centrally located between the Cape and Newport).

I know you said Bristol County, MA, but check out www.stonehouseclub.com located on Sakonnet Point in Little Compton, RI (which is adjacent to BC, MA). Little Compton is the quintessential little New England town with a white-steepled church in the town square. There's a lighthouse, fishing docks, Sakonnet Vineyards, all nearby.

It's definitely different and off the beaten path.

Just a thought, but if you really wanted to spend time in Bristol County and still be close to Newport, you could stay in Westport, Massachusetts. It's a very quaint town on the coast (close to beaches). There are two bed & breakfasts that I'd recommend: The Harbor Inn and Paquachuck Inn. Both are near the Harbor, and not far from the beach. Kind of cool in November, but very beautiful and quiet, as well as close to Newport.

Little Compton, Tiverton Four Corners, Westport, Sakonnet...there are really lovely and worth a trip. I've been to that area many, many times (day trips from Boston) and highly recommend it but can't recommend an inn. That said I can recommend a restaurant, The Back Eddy. Fabulous, fresh fish, right on the Westport harbor. Wonderful.

almc,

I hope you let us know what you decide. All of the areas mentioned are lovely by day. However, you would want to head out to Newport for the nightlife.
