Where to pick up rental car in San Francisco for our drive to Sonoma Valley

It is our plan to arrive at SFO and immediately drive to Healdsburg area for 5 or 6 nights before returning to San Francisco. We will be doing this on a Monday in March. I don't have our plane tickets yet so I don't know our arrival time, if that matters in giving advice.

I've read postings here that it would be cheaper to pick up our rental elsewhere in San Francisco. Since we are driving north and not staying in SF until the end of our trip is there a rental company we can reach easily by public transportation from the airport or should we just pick up our rental car at the airport? When we return to SF I plan to find a hotel near Union Square so suggestions for dropping the rental car would be helpful also.

Thank you, Deborah

If you are not going to stay at least the first night in SF, don't bother taking BART into the city just to pick up a car. The little you save will be spent on BART fare and then you have to deal with leaving the city to head to Healdsburg.

Dollar has an office on O'Farrell Street [other may too] that you could return the car to; I like them because they don't have drop off fees [well, I know they don't picking up in city and dropping at airport, so I am guessing same holds true for the reverse].

Thanks for the information about Dollar--I'll use that for the pick up and drop off form. Deborah

actually several rental agencies let you pick up in SFO and drop off downtown...just not the reverse.

My favorite website for renting cars is www.carrentals.com, and then check to see what dropoff options there are.

Consider flying into Sacramento (SMF) or Oakland if you don't plan on spending time in San Francisco. The car rental options may be cheaper than SFO.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I've taken the advice and decided to fly into Oakland and out of San Francisco. The prices and times fit our schedule and budget. Thank you again, Deborah
