Where should we go for 2nd honeymoon?

This fall is our 10-year anniversary so we want to take a little getaway trip. Also, we're lucky to have enough frequent flier miles to get 2 free tickets on Northwest Airlines. But I need suggestions on where to go. Here are the criteria:

1.Must be in U.S. (not Alaska or Hawaii, though) and accessible on Northwest Airlines
2. We'd travel in October or November - probably for 4-5 days.
3. Must be things to see - husband doesn't like laying around on a beach.

Can anyone help with suggestions? If you recommend a particular city, give me some ideas of what to do there, or if you have restaurants to recommend. thanks!

My husband and I went to San Antonio for 5 days at the end of May(dont know about weather in Oct)& stayed at La Mansion del Rio Hotel on the Riverwalk. It was beautiful.Ask for a room overlooking the water. Great shops, restaurants(try Boudros) and neat bars. Sightseeing was great. Also have been to New Orleans-fun place. Stayed at The Sonesta and it was very nice. If I were to go back I saw a place on tv about great country inns called Melrose Mansion. It looked very romantic and beautiful. Try typing in Melrose Mansion New Orleans to find website.Have fun and congrats.

Comment 1: I hope James Rubin realizes that his three-year old baby got onto his e-mail account. A proper response for this posting is to not allow his three-year old baby to watch a Barney video tonite.

Comment 2: I'll second the choice for San Antonio; it's a city where we have spent one of 42 trips we have called honeymoons. Weather there should be nice, the RiverWalk will be romantic, and there's nice gardens, animal parks, museums, and historic sites to visit. It'll be just about perfect!

Thanks for the responses so far (except for the 1st one! - don't know what I said to get that!). We've already traveled to several cities - Boston, New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas. Mostly what we enjoyed about these places was the variety of things to see - historic sites, nature, shopping, good restaurants, theatre, etc.

Nancy, you and your husband come on out to Arizona and see nature at its best. NWA flies into Phoenix, and from there head north to Sedona. To get a free 72-page booklet telling all about our beautiful area, just dial 1-800-288-7336. The CofC is open every day, just waiting for your call. If you have more questions, e-mail us. October and November are two of our best months. The others are: December, June, May, July, August, February, March, April, September, and I forget the other one.

Considering what you like to do and where you have already been, I will suggest New Orleans (should be cooler by then) or Chicago (I used to live just over the border in Wisconsin, and September weather is fantastic especially if you are coming from somewhere very hot). I would have said Toronto, Canada also (great museums, shopping, ethnic food, and up there with New York and London for theater), but you said U.S. I guess Chicago is a lot like Toronto. I haven't been to San Antonio, but my wife has, and she liked it.

Dan, It's not too bad - people CAN be blocked off the internet. Report these **sholes to their ISP (in this case hotmail) and most providers will discontinue their service. Sure, they can choose another ISP, but eventually they will get thrown off that one, too.

Nancy, for somehing "different" and a little laid back, how about Makinaw Island, Michigan? It is very beautiful in early fall. Very romantic. Lots of B&B's. No cars on the island - just horses and bicycles. Kinda quiet, though - might not be your bag if you want the major nightlife. Hope you have a wonderful time wherever you choose!

I have been researching Maine and Vermont during that time of year, more toward Sept.- Oct. I know the fall foliage is suppose to be breathtaking and have even considered an inn-to-inn bike tour. As suggested above, San Antonio is a great place to go! Wonderful food and lots to see. I would also look into Charleston; friends have raved about it! Good Luck.

The answer to what did you do to deserve that response was---nothing!! I don't know how to report these guys, but someone must be on top of it. How about Sante Fe, NM?? Really romantic, Don't know about NWA though. Of course, you know I'm going to say SF--wonderful city full of things to do and I believe you could get here on NWA. And, there's Seattle also. Charleston is wonderful as it Savannah but I would want to know from natives about the hurricane season. There's no better party city than New Orleans. and yes, Chicago is still great at that time of year. Does this help? Would be better to know where you're coming from. Don't let the jerks discourage you---we've all heard them before!

New Orleans is a good suggestion. It's where you'll find THE most romantic hotel I've ever seen (and I've been around a bit): SONIAT House in the French Quarter.

Sedona, Arizona -- stay at the Auberge or the Enchantment Resort. There's lots to do and don't miss a Pink Jeep expedition!

Portland, Oregon -- stay at the RiverPlace Hotel on the banks of the Willamette River or at the Heathman (old-world elegance). If you or your husband likes beer, this is the place to go: Brew Pub City! There also are great restaurants, gardens, bookshops, jazz and so on.

Santa Fe, New Mexico -- stay at the Inn of the Anasazi

Pasadena/Los Angeles -- stay at the Ritz Huntington in Pasadena; it's LA, there's LOTS to do. Or, you could stay in Santa Monica at Shutters on the Beach and still be in LA with lots to do.

San Francisco (of course) -- lots to do and many lovely places to stay; the Inn at the Opera is charming and inexpensive; at the high end there's the Ritz Carlton and The Sherman House.

I would suggest Lake Tahoe. We went on our first honeymoon there and loved it. There probably won't be any skiing that time of year but with Tahoe you never no. South Lake taho has casino's and nightlife. There are lake dinner cruises, horseback riding, hiking, boating, etc. Some of the best scenery and nature I have ever seen. Took a really nice drive around the lake to squaw valley. Considering going back for our 5 year anniversary. E-mail if you have questions.

Kat's suggestions for The Enchantment Resort in Sedona and in Santa Fe are super. And, she's so right when she suggests the great old Ritz Carlton Huntington in Pasadena---------We used to live in Pasadena and now whenever we get back, we go immediately to the Huntington. It's a rebuilt turn of the century grand hotel and run by Ritz Carlton with their superb service and cheerfulness, it's great! Also, look for a book called "Romantic Weekends for Two--Northern California" I think there are more of them in a series and they are great! Congratulations---we just did 30! That will be on you before you know it!

How about Carmel/Monterrey/Big Sur??? NWA probably flies into SFO from where you are.

(PS to nice people at Fodors - THANK YOU)
