What to pack / wear along Oregon Coast?

We will be going to Portland and the Oregon Coast on June 12 for our anniversary. We are used to the warm southern Cali beaches. I'm not sure on what to plan on wearing, will I need a jacket in June? Will it be warm enough to wear shorts /t-shirts? I know the weather is unpredictable there, just not sure what to expect. Any suggestions?? My husband has warned me to not Overpack!!

Rainjacket
Fleece jacket or vest for warmth.
Long pants
Shoes, socks

It isn't usually warm. It is usually cool, misty or rainy in June. Bring shorts and bathing suit, but don't expect to wear them much.

Yes, you will definitely need a jacket. Nothing heavy, but rather layers work better here. Fleece and a rain jacket as mentioned above are staples in our wardrobes here. If we have an unusual warm spell, you might get away with shorts for part of the day, but you will most likely still have fleece or a sweatshirt on at the same time. Just bring some layers and you will be fine.

Oh no, I hope my husband is not disappointed! The area along the oregon coast is beautiful, but we live in Utah and we have plenty of cold weather here, so was hoping for a little warmth. So I shouldn't pack sandals and capris I take it? What are the approximate temps during June?

It will likely be warmer than you have been all winter, but not particularly warm. The average high for Portland in June is 73, so it might be sandals and capri weather while you are there. Chances are you'll get some warmer temps and some cooler temps. Thats why layers are recommended.

Mid-fifties and possibly a bit brisk.

Where on the Oregon Coast? If it's an area with tidepools, you will want teva type flairs you can roll up. There are many tidepools and you may want to step on the rocks in the water to look at them. You get used to the cold water on your feet if you run through the water or look for sea anenomes and starfish, but will probably be wearing at least a sweat shirt at all times. A change of shoes is a good idea. Also, trails will be muddy - beautiful trails, but sloppy.

Just don't think of it as a beach vacation. Think of it as a "coastal getaway" and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are great rainforest hikes, walks along the water, lots to do. Just not a sun bathers paradise - not by a longshot.

Wow! Bad editing on my part. I deleted a whole sentence somehow. You will want teva type sandals or water shoes. Also, capris or flairs you can roll up. There!

Yes, the Oregon Coast is not southern California. It can be warm and sunny in Portland and overcast and 60 on the coast. Sometimes the coast is mild in the winter when it's not as nice in Portland.

Actually, as noted, even June in Portland can be rainy and not all that warm. Definitely expect to wear a sweatshirt while walking on the beach on the coast. If you're lucky and you get some warmer weather, you can take off the sweatshirt.

Orcas, we will be at Cannon Beach. Thanks for your suggestions. Sounds like a beautiful and romantic area. That's what we want. What about dress for dinner. Are the restaurants extremely casual? Are the nicer restaurants a place to dress up, or just very casual wear? Thanks for everyones input!

Oregon in general is extremely casual. While you wouldn't want to walk into a nice restaurant in Cannon Beach in shorts and flip-flops, you don't need dressy clothes, either. Casual clothes are fine.

I was at the coast last summer over the 4th of July. The coastal temps were cool; capris and sandals were OK during the day, really cooled down a lot at night, necessitating fleece and jeans. However if you venture in to Portland at all during your trip, it was very hot there...definitely shorts and t-shirts. Cannon Beach is very nice...we stayed in a rental home in a very small coastal town close to there. Really loved it (but then, I'm from Illinois....any ocean is nice!!)

You can't count on it being hot in Portland in the summer; it CAN be 100+ degrees (not humid though), but it could also be in the 70s. I've seen some July 4th weekends here that were hot and others that were rainy and cold.
