What local people have the hardest to interpret accents?

Tennessee? Kentucky? Alabama? England? Ireland? Jamaica?

I just read a book that was written by a flight attendant about the airline industry, he swears that he needed a translator for some Scottish and Northern English accents.

I always find it funny when MTV or VH1 needs to use subtitles when interviewing bands like Oasis, from Liverpool.

In the US, I think some of the "urban" accents are almost impossible to decipher.

Ozzy's from Birmingham. Another vote for Northern England!

Though, Jamaicans can be pretty tough.

Ginny,

This is the kind of asinine posting that gives this board a bad name. Web's response was right on--considering the poor composition of your question.

Break's over, Ginny, time to get back to school.

Boston. Though I grew up in the state I could barely understand them when we were all thrown together as UMies in Amherst.

England can be difficult. We have one sailing friend from England and another from Ireland. When we talk to them individually they are relatively easily understood, but when they begin talking with each other, it's as if they've lapsed into a foreign language. Amazing, really.

I'm from North East England and when we are in America if we speak at the same speed we do at home I think people find it very difficult to understand us!

thought this was the US board Ginny. Jamaica, England? Take a geography course in summer school to go with the Engish course you failed.

To answer that question, you have to see the movie "Snatch," in which Brad Pitt imitates a gypsy/cockney accent. It'll take three viewings before you can figure out what he's saying.

OK, so Ginny is no Ernest Hemingway. Jeez, lighten up, willya.

Difficult for WHOM? Southerners sometimes can't understand northerners and v.v. Brits and Americans have trouble with each other. ETC ETC ETC!

Ginny, what are you considering the "standard" or "pure" form of English compared to which the south or England or Ireland or Jamaica are non-standard and impure?

I'd be willing to bet the Queen of England would have a little trouble with you, esp. with your quirks of syntax.

Grow up, Ginny. It's all relative and you are not the center of the linguistic universe.

I had to read your post 3 times before I understood what you were trying to say, so I think you were very rude to Web when he corrected your post. I don't think he was being nasty, just clarifiying the question.

Anybody with yo yo yo and what follows can not be understood. It's like they have a mouth full of marbles or cotton, completely unable to enunciate even the smallest of words. If they are on TV I switch on the closed captioning just so I can follow along.

OliveOyl,

this is off the subject, but, whatever happened to your good 'net buddy Leone/L? I never see him post on here anymore. He had actually become almost tolerable after reforming his pompous, annoying attitude. I saw a post a while back where some guy supposedly exposed his real name and his employer - I assume that was a hoax but did that scare him off?

"youknowwho, oh he's here you just have to wake up. The board is better now that he is noticeably back.
