What is Ruth's Chris Steakhouse like?

I have never been to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and was considering going to the one in Philadelphia while I am there on vacation. What is the dress code like? Can I wear nice pants and a button down shirt or do I need to dress up more? Most of the clothes I'll be bringing will be quite casual, but I want to also bring something comfortable to wear to nicer restaurants.

You'll be fine in nice casual attire. The food is quite good. Prices are on the high side. Service is usually very good, too.

"Business casual" is just fine for Ruth's Chris.

IMHO, this is the best chain restaurant in the country. I have been to several in several cities, and they are consistently excellent. Very good food, service and decor.

As an anecdote, while in Scottsdale last year, we ate at the Chart House one evening and Ruth's Chris on another. (before you flame me, we had the 3 kids and wanted predictability). In that head to head comparison, there was no comparison. Ruth's made the Chart House feel like Denny's.

Also, agree with Carnivore. It is a bit pricey...and the menu is a la carte.

Smith & Wollensky is also a favorite. Ruth Chris' secret is they sear their steaks in butter - heart attack special, but delish.

Casual aok.

Casual wear is fine. Prices are competitive with most better quality steakhouses.

Talk about a fat induced coma! Butter, butter everywhere but the 2 locations I've been to were very good and the service was very good...I had a sidedish called Lyonnaise potatoes (sauteed with onions) that was delicious...it does add up though because everything is a la carte.

I hated it! The side dishes were OK but my steak was drenched in butter. If I would have known I would have ordered it plain, plus I make a better steak anyway.

Dee: you should specify when you order.
Places like Ruth's Chris will prepare their foods any way you want them.

But they don't read minds.

Best steaks, bar none, but my husband also enjoys their lamb chops. Their Shrimp Remoulade is excellent and for a side dish you can't go wrong with their Augratin Potatoes (lots of gooey cheese!). You will blow your diet but it is soooo worth it!

I didn't like them..its the butter thing...and if you don't know ahead of time, you werent expecting it. But, if you have time, there is a place right across the bridge in Voorhees NJ called the Library II...the most excellent steaks...was just there last weekend. I usually don't eat meat, but when I do, that's where I go. Have fun!

Donna, I just topped an old thread for you entitled "Ruth's Chris" that I posted when I was planning to go to the one in Baltimore. There's some good info you might find interesting (and like all threads, some dumb stuff, too). We found the Baltimore one to be enjoyable. Good Luck

If you want to spend the money in Philly on Ruth's, I can suggest so many better places. For steaks, go to Morton's, Prime Rib, or Capital Grill (also chains, but better). If you really want to treat yourself well, go to Striped Bass or Buddakan- by far the best Philadelphia restaurants.

Skip Ruth's Chris!!!! Go for Gibson's, Gene and Georgetti's or the Chop House. They are much better places.

I'm really interested in trying Ruth's Chris because I'm from Massachusetts and we don't have them around here . . .we do have Capital Grill and Morton's etc though, so I want to try something different.

No there's no freaking Gibson's/Chop House/Gene and Georgetti's etc. here in Philly. I agree with the poster about Prime Rib and Cap Grille being FAR better than Ruth Chris. If you want a real Philly experience and a wonderful steak, try The Saloon.

Ruth's Chris is not bad but if Morton's is in town it is by far a better restaurant. I also really like Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House in Denver. I think they are a chain but not sure of how many locations they have compared to the other two I mentioned.
