What is a must in Detroit?

We are a group of ten people and we will be visiting Detroit on March, for a week, on occasion of an exhibition at Cobo Hall. I should organize all our spare time in order to make the most of this visit. Could you please recommend any places near Cobo Hall/downtown to be visited after 6 p.m. Thanks a lot in advance!!

I would suggest taking the "People Mover", Detroit's version of light rail, and visit Greektown which has some great little shops and restaurants. A favorite of mine and many locals,is Pegasus, which has great Greek cuisine and atmosphere. I would suggest going in a group, since Detroit, like many other large cities, has its share of crime problems. Have a good time!

I don't know if you were interested in going to any clubs or not but I'll tell you of a few clubs and cool hang outs. On east Jefferson there is a club called the Nile it is supposed to have excellent music and
food. There is also a good restaurant in the Pontchartrain which is right across the street from Cobo called Mesquite Creek. The grilled chickem salad and steak are to die for. You may also want to visit Trappers Alley in Greektown. This is a collection of stores with a lot of "Detroit" style stuff. You may even want to venture over to Canada to play the slots. The tunnel is less than 5 minutes from Cobo and the Casino is probably less than 10 minutes away. The food is reasonably good and cheap, not to mention it's open 24 hours and the U.S dollar is worth an extra thirty cents over there. Be careful and don't let the Canadians jip you.

anyone discourage you by saying that Detroit is a scary city. Downtown is pretty safe and you'll see plenty of police patrolling. have fun!!!11

Hey. Stay in large size groups and look big and act like you know where you are going. DO NOT GET OFF the Peoplemover after dark except at your stop in Greektown. The Cobo area is well patrolled and well lit and things should be cool but don't venture too far or the predators will find you. Hit a Wings game if they are in town when you arrive at Joe Louis Arena (next to Cobo). Don't let anyone fool you, ANY big city (Detroit included) carries plenty of danger for the ill-prepared. Fun can be had for the careful. DD

Consider going to Windsor across the river to the
casino's and restaurents. The city is clean and
safe, and the folks are polite. Detroit though is a scary place after dark away from the "convention" area, but its an OK town.

There's really not a helluva lot to do in downtown Detoilet. It's pretty barren at night, and the Red Wings are always sold out. You should try to get to the original Motown recording studio. The Rhino Club is a cool little piano bar in the warehouse district. Try to get to the Henry Ford museum. Windor has much better eats - especially Chinese - and shopping is great there because of the weak Canadian dollar.

The Walleye fishing in the river is nearly the best in the world. I quit going to downtown for entertainment.

A true must-see are the Diego Rivera murals which portray the auto assembly lines of Detroit and their affect on the auto workers. The murals are at the Detroit Insititute of Arts. Call ahead to confirm the hours during which the Institute is open. The Institute is approx. 2-3 miles north of Cobo Hall on Woodward Ave. There is nothing like these anywhere else - you won't be disappointed!

I hope you have a nice visit to Detroit. Don't let everyone scare you it's not THAT dangerous. You just need to use common sense
and stay in well populated areas (like any big
city). You may want to check out Second City
(comedy club) near the Fox Theater. You may
also want to check out who is playing at the
Fox since it is a beautiful theater. There are also several restaurants by the Fox. Risata is in the same building as Second City. Tres Vite is right next the Fox and is a very nice restaurant. There is a parking garage right next to the theater and this area is always well patroled.
