What are some non-museum, fun things to do in San Diego?
Hi, we're planning a 5 day trip to San Diego this coming week (includes a weekend stay), and would like to know what are some (fun things to do/places to go hiking, kayaking, eat at, clubs, and even day trips that we can take that are worth the drive. Please help! Oh,we don't want to go to places geared towards families, as we're single and looking for adventure) thanks in advance!

I would suggest driving up to La Jolla to spend a few hours, dining & drinking and checking out the views. Also, going to Wild Animal Park - for adventure, take the jeep tour right into the midst of the wild animals. You might want to do a search under San Diego - you'll find TONS of info!

Hiking: Mount Palomar or Cuyamaca areas are about 30-45 minutes drive from city should challenge most hikers. For sheer beauty and not exercise, Torrey Pines State Reserve or Coronado beach.
Clubs: Gaslamp area for trendy. Pacific/Mission beach for laid back surfer type bars.
Eating: Don't miss a chance at great Mexican food near Old Town State Park.
Hope it stops raining.

If you haven't been to Napa Valley, drive up to Temecula. It is southern California's wine country. Callaway offers a tour and tasting. Others offer at least tastings.
In San Diego...Seaport Village is a great place to snook around and shop. Visit Coronado Island.
We took the trolley tour and that gave us some ideas of what we would like to do with the rest of our trip.

Thanks tons! great info, I actually did do a search under San Diego, and while I learned a few things, most of the information didn't particularly address my travel/vacation needs. So keep the FYI's coming! Any more suggestions about places to eat (love good food )? And is Rosarito Beach in Baja worth a day trip? How much time is sufficient to allocate for a trip there from San Diego? I checked out the town's website, it's not up and running so wasn't much help.

Julie, take a look at www.sdinsider.com. There are lots of things going on this month in San diego and most of them are listed here. I don't care much for Rosarito Beach. If you must go to Mexico, try going a bit further south to Puert Nuevo. Keep in mind that the wait to cross back into the US is now longer (post Sept. 11) and that, if you have a rental car, most rental agencies do not allow you to take their vehicles into Mexico.

if you have your own car, a trip down to rosarito is definitly worth it. there are lots of fun bars (papa & beers - younger crowd but great people watching place & other bars) and a nice bizarre for shopping. it's sort of in behind the street toward the beach - ask you if can't find it. then go to puerto nuevo for dinner & drinks. fun little place to waunder around. most popular for lobsters & margarittas. i'd leave san diego around one or two in the afternoon and then plan on being back in the late evening.
a fun restaurant in old town is casa de bandini's.
take the ferry from downtown to coronado for a few hours.
if you need something mellow after a night of partying, the harbour cruise is relaxing & interesting.

The drive to Ensenada(Mexico) takes you by some of the most scenic coastline on the west coast.More character and shopping than Rosarito. You cannot usually take a rental car to Mexico. At least there is good public transport to Tijuana.A trip to the third world is always an eye-opening experience. If you use the red car you can drink some margaritas.
