Weekend trip in Oct to Notre Dame - what to do when NOT at the game?

We are taking a group (22 people) (from Utah) to South Bend to a football game at Notre Dame in mid-October. We will be flying into South Bend mid-day on Friday, and then back out on Sunday evening. We are looking for suggestions for somewhere good (YUMMY, local - NOT a chain!, good for a group, unique...up to around $25/plate) to go for dinner on Friday night, and also for suggestions for things to do in the area on Sunday until late afternoon when we have to head back to the airport. We do have transportation for our group (vans), so that isn't an issue. We will be touring the campus and also going to the Football Hall of Fame already. What else is nearby that we can go/see/do that will give us some of the flavor of the area? Is there anything in "Amish country" that is open on Sundays? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! PS- most of the group do not drink, so wineries and such aren't the best option

Was back there last year for the SC game - and I would have suggested you fly into Chicago - stay there a night and drive the 2 hours over to South Bend, and then back to Chi-town, but you are already ticketed, righto?

I stayed a night with a college buddy and his wife who live in Warsaw - an hour? south - and somewhere between South Bend and Warsaw - we drove through an Amish community. Will see if I can get the name, as well as try to remember a couple of the other attractions in the area.

For those that might be interested, Culver Military Academy - Prep School - where the likes of George Steinbrenner went - is also about an hour away.

Yeah - the tickets are already bought - and trust me, it wasn't my choice given the option I would be spending ALL of the time that we aren't at the actual game in Chicago, but, since it wasn't my choice, now I've got to find some fun stuff to do in the SB area - would appreciate any input - thanks!

Was really only in South Bend a couple of days but there are other things to do around it, and think there was another post in here - under Indiana - on some choices, such as visiting an Amish town/farm area, which I am guessing has some things open on Sundays, but double check.

Here are some pages in case you didn't see these:

About 1/2 hr from South Bend is Nappanee. You might want to check this out: http://www.amishacres.com/

Here in Ohio all Amish attractions are closed on Sunday.

We had a very good dinner at LaSalle.

An unusual and beautiful place to eat is Tippecanoe Place--the old Studebaker mansion. We attended the rehearsal dinner there. The couple was married in the ND Chapel--beautiful!

Walking around the campus is really enjoyable and beautiful when the leaves are changing. Love the walk around the lake. We also had fun in the local bars.
