Weekend in Natchez
My best friend was getting married so we went away for a girlfriend type weekend. We got to Natchez, Mississippi around 1 pm and ate at the Magnolia Grill. It's at a neat little area of the city called Natchez underground. It's where the ferries used to dock and used to be full of bars, brothels etc. It's a neat place to eat and has a great view of the river.
We stayed at the Monmouth Historic Inn which was wonderful. Great attention to detail, the concierge and housekeeping type people were so friendly and helpful, the room was beautiful and the breakfast was just perfect. The grounds were beautiful and we took and evening walk each evening and sat by the pond and just chatted one evening pretty late. I'm already planning a return trip there.
We went on a tour of three homes all of which were fabulous. They have many plantation homes and you can get a map, information and tickets to where you want to go to at the Natchez Visitor's Visitor Center. It's probably one of the best visitor's center I've been to. They have very friendly staff, great information and nice bathroom and gift shop facilities. A must stop before you get going for the trip.
The houses we visited were all lovely, we went to the Rosalie, the Long Wood and Stanton Hall. I would say my favorite was the Rosalie although they were all very nice.
We went on a carriage ride through downtown which I would also recommend. The architecture and history was remarkable.
For dinner we at at the Monmouth at their amazing restaurant called 1818. They had a lovely menu, and a gentleman playing the piano on Saturday evening. It was the best dinner experience I've had since Alice Water's in Berkeley.
I had never been to Natchez but I'll be back. It's a very nice place. Not as much to do for kids, so I would recommend a girlfriend type weekend, a weekend with your spouse perhaps or even a getaway with your mom or aunts.
