Loved it..many parts reminded me of Paris. For respit from the madness I recommend the bar at the Tabard in Dupont Circle "the watering hole of Washington progressives".

Loved it as a twelve year-old! Loved it again as an adult on business trips! Washington, D.C. is a must-see for all Americans. Everyone in that town, from the cabbies to the hotel desk clerks, can tell you stories about things they know and have seen. It is moving and emotional and beautiful. Can't wait to take my kids.

Lived there for years, have visited often since, and I just love it! Great public transportation, museums among the best in the world, vast array of dining options, the monuments, vibrant neighborhoods... DC suffers an inferiority complex when it compares its cultural offerings to those of New York, but then what city can fairly compare itself to New York? And I agree with Spike, every American really should try to get to DC at least once--as a secular society, perhaps it's our Mecca?

Love it, and don't think I've found many places where my travel dollar goes so far.

Love it, but recognize its problems:

Don't visit during summer, the heat is oppressive.
Make certain you don't end up in a neighborhood where you'd rather not be; keep track of where you are, where you want to end up, and the best way to get between the two.
Don't drive your car if you can avoid it; traffic and parking are a nightmare.

However, no other city even comes close to allowing all visitors access to great museums at no cost.

Our school patrol trip was terrific - loved all the monuments and free museums. Of course, that was a few years back, to say the least, and as a mid-westerner I had some preconceived notions. But the capitol turned out okay, and next year we plan to take our own kids and tour it top to bottom (I hope the six days we've alloted will be sufficient). We encourage others to make the visit, despite these stressful times.

Love it! Subways are clean, safe, really convenient and a breeze to use. Restaurants are top notch. Museums are user friendly and diverse. Theater and music at Kennedy Center is always a treat.

Another LOVE IT!
Kind of like PamSf, but we feel it's more like Rome...kinda gritty, humid, crazy traffic/drivers but everywhere you look some sort of monument. Wait...yeah...like Paris too! ;-)

Always seems to have something going on too. Rock Creek Pkwy and C&O Canal are nice biking/jogging areas.
Excellent restaurants an 4th of July on The Mall is unbeatable.

Wow. My home town is getting rave reviews! Reading these posts makes me want to play tourist this weekend! Maybe I'll have brunch at the National Gallery...

What can you say - of course we love it!! There's so much going on all the time.

It's been a great city to live and work in for years. As far as politics go - you can work with it or ignore it!

Love it! I think it's the only place I could live in this country if I were to leave NYC. Love the museums, architecture, and open spaces, and the metro is great.

I go to Washington DC several times each year and I think it is an interesting and beautiful city. I always stay near Dupont Circle and never run out of familiar places that I need to re-visit as well as new places to check out. It has positive urban energy, inspiring architecture, historical significance, cultural diversity and a lot of creative, intelligent people.

rnrvr: I went on the school safety patrol trips too!!!!! Was just there last May and LOVED it even more! Can't wait to go back. I always wanted to spend the 4th of July there. I always get weepy when watching the fireworks and listening to the music and just getting involved in the moment....beautiful city, wonderful atmosphere and great concept! Judy

We love it too. Having relatives just outside the beltway in VA it is a great place to visit. We can take the metro into the city and scout around. So many interesting things to see and do. Great place to take the kids as it is so educational and fun at the same time.
