Vermont to Dallas roadtrip

Hey fellow travelers,
Have to drive from Vermont to Dallas, TX in January 2011. Looking to take 91 S over to 81S to 40W thinking to avoid as much snow as possible. Any advice on this long-distance cross-country trip for January?? Safety, routes, or just cool places to hang out for a few hours along the way? _Sooze

I 81 from PA to TN is a great route for good food. The Naked Oyster is a great place for lunch/dinner at Winchester at Exit 313. Try the buffet at Butcher Block BBQ @ Exit 307 in Stephens City. Just down I 81 a few miles at New Market is Southern Kitchen serving outstanding country food for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Exit 264. Harrisonburg has quite a few fine road food places convenient to I 81. I suggest you consider Jess' Quick Lunch or Little Grill at Exit 247. The Village Inn is very nice also at Exit 240. Staunton is just W of I 81 and a very nice town also. It's home to Mrs. Rowe's country food breakfast, lunch and dinner and Wright's Dairy Rite. Lexington, VA has a number of good restaurants like Bistro on Main for lunch/dinner, Macado's for sandwiches and Sheridan Livery Inn and Restaurant for lunch/dinner. Lexington is the home of VMI and W&L U. It's a beautiful town a few minutes W of I 81 and worth a visit. Home Place is a great restaurant several miles W of I 81 W of Roanoke at Exit 141 serving outstanding country food, good fried chicken and deserts in an old home. Just E of Lexington at Exit 188AB Frank's for the Memorie's is a great place for good road food with great outdoor dining. Roanoke has quite a few nice restaurants but they are mostly in town.

Get off I 81 at Exit 150B and go E to Highway 11. Turn left and go N a couple of miles to Pomegrante Restaurant for outstanding seafood and steaks for dinner.

Just a little N of Roanoke at Exit 150A/150/B is 3 Little Pigs. In Christiansburg just down the road a piece is Dude's, Due South, Farm House and Summit. All are very good places to eat. On S on I 81 in Wytheville, VA stop at Smokey's BBQ at Exit 70 or 73. Peking Chinese Restaurant is outstanding also. C J's Pizza is good if you have kids. At Abingdon, VA there's some fine places. Have lunch at the House on Main and dine on the porch, lunch or dinner at Peppermill or BBQ at Parks BBQ at Exit 17. Chick N Little is good country food and Ellis Soda Shop and Grill has good salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers and more with outdoor seating as well. Wildflower Bakery and Cafe is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner and it's close to I 81 at Exit 19. If you have time to detour to Johnson City or Bluff City then Cootie Brown's and Ridgewood BBQ are good road stops.

Depending on how you segment, Nashville is a great stop. Hotels on the West End (Church Street addresses) are in the Vanderbilt neighborhood. There is a Holiday Inn, Courtyard, Hampton Inn, and a Marriott. Many restaurants in walking distance.

If Memphis is a better location, the Germantown area hotels are in a good neighborhood.

I would avoid staying over in Arkansas if you can avoid. No insult, no safety issues, but most of the freeway exit options are a disappointment.

Before you reach Knoxville, TN you may need to make a road stop. Here's a neat place 30 miles E of Knoxville with good seafood for lunch. If you don't eat you can rest and get a cold drink. Get off I 40 at Exit 1A in Nashville, TN and go back E on West End about a mile and then turn left on 25th Ave. N just past Centennial Park take your 1st right on Elliston and Rotier's is just ahead. Get off and go right on Robertson Avenue then take your first left on Charlotte Avenue go past the shopping center on your left and take a left on 53rd Avenue N and Wendell Smith's is on your left open for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving good soul and country food. Paynes BBQ @ 1762 Lamar Ave., Memphis, TN. 901 - 272 - 1523.

The BBQ Shop and One and Only are my favorites but Payne's is famous for their pulled pork sandwich.

I would stay downtown so you could visit Beale Street. The Peabody is a great hotel downtown but there are more. Go to Gus' for world famous fried chicken.

If you don't want to deal with the traffic in Memphis, TN take the bypass around Memphis, TN and you won't have to stop in traffic there.

You may want to taste Memphis style BBQ if you did not stop in Memphis. Stop at Exit 271 off I 40 at Road Side BBQ right on the side of I 40 a few miles W of West Memphis, AR

Road Side BBQ @ 196 St. Hwy. 147, Procter, AR. 870 - 733 - 9208.

Get off I40 at Exit 241A/B and go S on North Washington Street in Forrest City, AR to The Ole Sawmill Cafe. It's open for breakfast, lunch or dinner and serves outstanding country food. Get off on the S side of I40 on N Washington and go about 2 blocks to Ole Sawmill Cafe on your right. A good place to stop on I40 is Gene's BBQ and Family Restaurant @ Exit 216 in Brinkley, AR. Get off I40 on the S side on N Main St. and go about half a mile and you will find Gene's on the right serving outstanding country food. There's a lot more than just BBQ so stop by Gene's for sure even if you rest up and get a cold drink. Craig's BBQ in Devall's Bluff, AR is outstanding. Get off I 40 at Exit 183 at Carlisle, AR on Highway 13 and go S to Nick's BBQ in Carlisle, AR. Get off I 40 at Exit 175 at Lonoke, AR and go S on Highway 31 to E 8th Street and go to Pruett's for good BBQ.

I would not stop in Little Rock, AR unless you just want to. If you need to stop get off I 30 at Exit 133 and go N on Geyser Springs Road to Sim's for good BBQ. At Exit 116 at Benton, AR you will find outstanding road food at Ed & Kay's Restaurant on the N side of I30 for lunch and dinner. On up the road at Arkadelphia, AR you will find good hamburger's at Hamburger Barn or good country food for breakfast or lunch at The Honeycomb Restaurant at Exit 73.

If you want real family country food then get off I30 at Exit 222 in Texarkana, TX and go to Bryce's Cafeteria for the best home cooked food in America. It's just off I30 at Exit 222 and very convenient.

One of my favorite road stops is Ramage Farms Country Store at Exit 208 for good road food. The restaurant is an old building just off the N side of I30 and has all sorts of food stuff to purchase to take home. They serve outstanding BBQ, sandwiches, combo plates and steaks. Stop by if just to rest and get a cold drink. It's worth the effort to visit the old store. Stop at Nana's Diner in New Boston, TX.

Get off I30 at Exit 201 on N Center St. and get a good country meal at Nana's which is right off I30. Get Off I30 at Exit 127 on Shannon Road in Sulphur Springs, TX and go to Burton's Family Restaurant for great road food at breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a typical diner and nothing is fancy about it but the food which is not expensive. It's next to the Best Western and convenient for quick access to I30.
