Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurants in Norfolk, VA and Virginia Beach?

I have searched happycows.com, but have only come up with a few and they don't sound promising. I'm hoping Birdie or someone else can recommend a few places or at least a couple places that are vegan friendly. Thanks very much.

I don't know off-hand annetti. Before I look into it, try posting your question on Chowhound.com.

I don't get down to Norfolk a lot to eat so I really don't know much about the restaurant scene there. I checked on Open Table but didn't see much other than our local Indian restaurant chain, Nawab, which never impressed me much.

Birdie, I posted on Chowhound as you suggested. I suspect I won't get any or very few responses.

Thanks very much. Usually, happycows.com has suggestions, even health food stores, but there appears to be a dearth of listings.

The only restaurant I have eaten at that is has vegan selections is Azar's (http://azarfoods.com/). I have eaten at the Norfolk rest. and enjoy their gyros. I am not a vegetarian so cannot comment on their veg. dishes. Good luck!

Nan: Thanks very much. Felafel's are always an option if done well. We'll keep it in mind.

Birdie: So far, not getting much of a response on Chowhound, except to suggest I try Happycows.com. I'll wait a few more days. Perhaps, a suggestion will turn up.

Of course, rt after I posted, someone on Chowhound made a suggestion of Pasha Mezze (in Ghent), a Turkish restaurant that has lots of veg options. It sounds very nice. Has good reviews. So, we have two places to try now.

I ate at Stove, a restaurant in Portsmouth, last week and when I asked about vegetarian options, they had a separate menu with 3 items. If you google Stove restaurant, you should find their website. It is an excellent restaurant but you would definitely need reservations if you want to go.

Thanks, Judy. I checked the website this morning and spoke to the chef. He makes three vegan choices daily as you noted though they are not on the website. It sounds like a nice pleasant place for a more upscale meal. The chef is from Mississippi, very friendly, and had a nice Southern accent!

I am not a vegetarian but don't eat a lot of meat....I really enjoyed my veggie meal there. The chef used to have a restaurant in Norfolk which closed a few years ago, so we followed him to Portsmouth. It is not a bad drive....no farther than Va Beach.

Diana, Thanks for all the recommendations. I know they were well-meant and I thank you again, but few of them had vegan options, though I imagine it's a great choice for the non-vegan.

Annetti, this week I'll check with some friends re restaurants. I do think you would find vegan at Pasha Mezze and Azar's. Bardo's offers sort of Asian tapas (I'm certain there's a term for it but I don't know how else to describe it)and has a pretty extensive menu. As I recall, there were several items that could have been vegan

Judy, Thanks again. Pasha Mezze and Azar's both have potential per their websites.

Have you suggestions on where to do food shopping while in Norfolk? We'll be in Larchmont. Looking for a market equivalent to Whole Foods that will have good produce or organic. Maybe even a small cafe attached to it? annetti

Unfortunately, you will not find the equivalent of whole foods in Norfolk. Probably the 2 stores that come closest are Trader Joe's and Fresh Market in Virginia Beach. The best store (that I'm aware of) closest to Larchmont is the new Harris Teeter at the corner of Princess Anne Rd & 19th Street. There are Farm Fresh and Kroger closer to Larchmont.

There is a Whole Foods being planned for Va Beach but I'm not sure when it opens. If you decide to shop at Trader Joe's or Fresh Market, they are close together so you could shop at both, maybe after a visit to the beach.
