Vancouver/Victoria BC
I am planning to arrive at Vancouver or Victoria from Honolulu in June, stay in Vancouver and Victoria abour a week each and get back to Tokyo from there. My main purpose is to paint ( water
color) landscapes. Can anyone suggest me if I should fly to Vancouver or Victoria from Honolulu first. Thank you in advance.

I am so glad you will have a chance to visit a part of my country...and one that is so beutiful. As a painter, you will find much to please you.
Tia has given you good advise - to fly directly to Vancouver. At the airport there will be a Torist Information Centre where you may obtain a great deal of information about what to see and do. It is quite likely you will meet someone there who speaks Japanese so it will be easy to find out about what interests you.
If you look further down the list of topics in this forum, there is one entitled, "Going to Vancouver, BC in July'98" --- many people have given ideas of what is nice to see. This may be helpful to you.
You can arrange to take a bus from downtown Vancouver onto the ferryboat - you get off the bus for the 1-1/2 hours it takes to cross - and then to Victoria. The ferry ride is wonderful! You see other islands and sometimes harbour seals.
I am sorry that the other person who posted did not like Victoria. Of course, like any city, there are some parts that are very much for tourists (such as Crystal Palace which is not worth the money) but mostly it is simply a very beutiful city. The Royal BC Museum is located there and is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the history of B.C. You will also hear about Butchart Gardens but I think you must have a car to get there.
If you can arrange to go by bus, it would be worth driving to Chemanis - a small town about 1 or 1-1/2 hrs. away. (There should be information about Chemanis at the Tourist Centre at Vancouver airport)
Whatever you decide to see and do....may your visit be a wonderful and happy one!

Canada 3000 offer flights direct from Honolulu to Victoria. Please do not worry about the comment of Victoria being like Disneyland - Victoria has magnificent natural beauty, wonderful parks, ocean and mountain vistas, and friendly people.
There are lots of free activities. For painting local scenery, here are some suggestions. East Sooke Park, Beacon Hill Park, Thetis Lake Park and Matheson Lake Park (great swimming too), Witty's Lagoon, Gonzales Bay, Uplands Park,
Mt. Tolmie and do not miss the Gulf Islands, if you have time. Have a super trip.

I have similar request. We are planning to go to victoria from seattle but we have only two days but we will have a car. One day we plan to tour around the city including Butchart gardens.
I will consider Chemanis but is there any other place that is about 2 hours away that is very scenic to visit. We are travelling from US east coast; hence a place unique to BC or Canadian west coast will be a change!
Any suggestions! Thanks

I was in Victoria and Vancouver last summer. I hated Vancouver - and wish that I had stayed in Victoria the whole time. Again, ignore the "Victoria is like Disneyland" comment. Simply not true. Vancouver is like your typical large city. Victoria is completely different. Just drive around a bit and you will find some of the most beautiful scenery! Most everyone walks around or rides a bicycle. I walked around at 10:30pm and felt completely safe. I'm planning to go back in a year or so.

Victoria is definitely a better choice than Vancouver. It is quite unique. Vancouver is just another big city. There are some neat places in Vancouver but Victoria is truly unique. If you are driving from Seattle that take the Anacortes, WA to Sidney BC ferry. Anacortes is about 60 miles north of Seattle and Sidney is about 15-20 miles from Victoria. This ferry travels through the San Juan Islands. The scenery is spectacular. I would skip the Chemanius trip unless you have time. There is plenty of unique things right in the Victoria area.
