Vacations with teens

Figure out what the teens are interested in. For example, on a visit to Mammoth Caves in KY we took our son on a surprise visit to the Corvette assembly plant which has a great tourist tour through the factory. He also likes to go to car museums. He and his father both like small dirt racetracks. In VT you can find skiing in winter, mountain biking in summer. St John USVI has fantasic snorkeling and many beaches and hiking trails. Water parks are great for all ages. I like the lazy rivers but teens would probably prefer the big water slides. The important thing is spending time together and teaching them how to explore the world. On a road trip we would check local newspapers and bulletin boards for interesting local events to attend such as antique gasoline engine shows, civil war encampments, doodlebug pulls (homemade tractors from the 40s). You might also look into some volunteer opportunities such as working a checkpoint for a mountain bike race or trail crew for a sled dog race. It is much more fun to be part of the action than to be merely a spectator. Explore calendar of events in local newspaper websites for areas you will be visiting.

Ours used to love Sanibel Island, FL because there are bikes and mopeds to rent, lots of bike lanes and the island is small enough to "set them loose." They also loved the canoeing through the wildlife preserve. As for cities, San Francisco can't be beat with the cable cars, Alcatraz and the Saturday farmers market--lots of interesting people and entertainment. Or, how about "Surf City", Santa Cruz where they can play on an old fashioned boardwalk or take surfing lessons.(boards and wet suits to rent as well) Just down the coast is Monterey with its great aquarium and there you can go kayaking in the bay with the sea otters or pick out on Fisherman's Wharf. In the winter we used to take them skiing at Keystone in Colorado, another safe place where they can ride the shuttle buses independently of parents.

Woodloch Pines Resort....in the poconos, tons of things to do all day and night, very very family oriented, your teens will make friends, and be on their own as much as you/they want them to be, or do stuff as a family. they have a website...www.woodloch.com
my extended family went there recently for the first time and had so much fun together, we were literally on a high the whole week after we got back.
