Upgrade to 1st class on Continental

Does anyone have ideas to upgrade 2 international tickets on Continental to 1st class?

1) Use FF miles
2) Pay for them

If you use Ff miles the ticket has to be an upgradable ticket (certain unrestricted fares) nad then they usually charge an additional upgrade fee each way. For example 2 years ago I bought open jaw from newark to Milan zurich to newark upgradable fare 450$ + 400 additional ea. way + 40,000 miles. I think it's 30,000 for domestic.

I have flown First, and I love it. But the last time we flew to CDG the flight was 6 hours long. I am just not sure it would be worth all the money and miles for that length of time.

To the best of my knowledge, Continental does not have a first class for international servcie, they only have Business/First. It is perfectly fine, but it is a business class seat in terms of size, pitch etc. Cabin and service is also business class, not first class. Perfectly acceptable, and certainly better than economy, but not sure what you are expecting.

Agree with the first poster about the two ways to upgrade; also some economy tickets are not upgradable at all, so you have to check with the airline.

It is "business/first" but the seats completely recline and the cabin service is certainly wonderful. It bears NO resemblance to economy in service or "seat pitch".

Neo got it right - those are your options - actually, it maybe a combination of the two. CO allows upgrading for miles alone in Y or H fare, but with other fare classes you pay miles plus a service fee that ranges from $200 to $450 each way. Sometimes it can be a good deal, and sometimes the added service fee brings the total close to what might be available during a sale - just need to check before buying. The advantage to buying in BF is that you get additional FF miles which you do not get on an upgraded ticket. Right now they are having a BF to Europe sale.

If you lack sufficient FF miles you can purchase them (up to a total of 255 of the amount you need for your reward) at a cost of $32/1k (plus taxes).
In terms of the service, it is indeed a single BusinessFirst rather than separate First and Business - CO actually pioneered that concept and to my mind has done a great job with it.
There are really no hard and fast rules that differentiate First from Business so each person seems to have their own opinion of what criteria apply. The seats do not go fully flat (170 vs 180 degrees) but are quite comfortable. - I usually manage to sleep quite well in them. For short trips I'd probably tough it out in coach (well, maybe not in those godawful 757's) , but for long flights it is a very nice way to travel.
