TRIP REPORT

As you know i went in US west from Sept. 1st to Sept. 15th 2005. It was an amazing trip. One of my dreams came true : a road trip in the West.
Here's my trip report, i will try to write good english (sorry in advance for the mistakes)

Day 1.

We arrived in LAX during the afternoon. We took our nice Convertible Sebring at Thrifty.
the weather was perfect. We went to our friend's luxury condo in Downtown. we had diner and went to bed early.

Day 2.

We leave L.A. arround 7.00am to go to Sequoia Ntl. Park. We took the US 5 and the CA 99 via Visalia. We were in advance so we decide to take the north road and join General Grant Tree "Your Nation's Christmas tree". The road in the mountain is very very very long but pretty to see. We finally arrive at the north entrance of the park where we take our National Park Pass for $50.
We arrive on the car park of the G.G tree. The trees are huuuuuges. Already on the car park, it amazing to see how cars are small next of these giants (and american car are bigs)...
We walk a little and see this amazing tree. WAOUH!!! Enormous. We take some pictures and leave. We take the road going to the south, the Generals Highway.
This road is incredibly beautiful, the view on Kings Canyon and on the west valley.
We arrive at General Sherman Tree car park, we take a "civilized" trail (more an alley). There are not a lot but for me too much people. But it's ok. the "trail" is nice and pleasant. we arrive in front of the biggest life form on earth. Again : WAOUH!!! we stay a few minutes for contemplation and pictures.
We came back to the car and go to Giant Forest, (that was one of my favorite sites). We walk arround with the trail. It's so quiet, so peacefull.
After we go to the attraction of the park : Tunnel Log, very funny! Nice picture of me in the car...
And to finish, we go to Moro Rock, we climb the stair and arrive at the top : the view is incredible... It's windy but we're alone on the top. The view on the Sierra Nevada is amazing. Pictures and we go back to the car. We take to road and we starting to have a problem , the GAS LIGHT and Signal. Very bad... Hopefully, we find a gas station at Three Rivers.
We finally arrive in L.A. arround 10.00pm.

DAY 3.

This is gonna be a long day...
We leave from Downtown at 5.30am. Not a lot of people on the road. we stop to have a breakfast (30mn). Now our road trip start...
We take the US 15 to join the US 40, the road in the Mojave desert is magic. Not a lot of cars, i'm surprised. Anyway, we cross the Colorado river, we're in Arizona. Lands starting to change. it's so beautiful. We take the AZ 64 and we arrive at Grand Canyon National Park arround 3.30pm. it was the longest drive of our lives. We first go to take our room at Yavapai Lodge. Very nice...
The first view point we visite is the Yavapai Point. We arrive, park the car and walk... My first look on the Grand Canyon. OH MY GOD!!! AMAZING!!! INCREDIBLE!!! POWERFUL!!! I'm so happy to be here.
I take a lot of pictures. the weather was perfect.
After that we take the south rim road to go to east. We stop at Grandview Point ( for me it's the best one) and others points of view so beatifuls. we make a longer stop at Watch tower and come back to see the sunset at Grandview Point. Magic!!!! We go back to the hotel, have a quick diner and go to bed.

DAY 3.

I wake up early to see the sunrise. Some people prefer to sleep...
i arrive at Yavapai Point. the sun is coming.
The show is perfect. I find a quiet place to enjoy it quite alone. The sun is now begining to put fire in the canyon. No noise except some japanese tourists who are shouting because it's marvelous. Please Shut up!!!! they become more quiet... thanks.
It's magic like the sunset. Even more beautiful than the sunset. Nature in the morning is really nice to see and to listen. Small noises, cool light... Anyway it's wonderful... i feel so good at this time, being there.
I come back to the hotel and we leave. We make a stop at Desert View Point to take a Breakfast. We leave the G.C Ntl Park arround 9.00am. We leave the Kaibab National Forest to go back in the desert. We're now in the Navajo Nation. We're going to Monument Valley. The road is cool. We leave the AZ64 to take the AZ 89 North. After we take the 160 and make a stop at Kayenta to lunch. We are closed.... We are now on the 163 and the lands are wonderfuls. I'm now feeling this impression of liberty and american dream. it's strange and pleasant. it's like i was made to be there at that time. So strange.
We finally arrive next to Monument Valley, we're first going to our Hotel in Mexican Hat, the San Juan Trading Post. It's so pretty. we make a small stop to drink and smoke a cigarette and arround 3.00pm we leave to go back to the Park.
We arrive at the park, pay the fee and start our tour on the scenic drive. it's very beautifull, these colors, these rocks. we go slowly because the Sebring is a convertible, not a SUV or 4x4 truck... We come back to the visitors center to see the sunset but the clouds are here and and the moment where the sun start to disapear in the horizon, the rain arrive... Sh....t!!!!! I'm sad, but in a way it strange to have rain in the desert and the darkness on the site makes teh place more strange and mysterious.
We go back to the hotel, have a nice dinner and go to bed.

DAY 4.

An other long day is starting. We wake up and take the car to go to see the sunrise on the east side of Monument valley. We stop on the road and look that. colors are so red, it's really magic(again...), we come back to Mexican hat to see what is Mexcican Hat, a funny rock. nature can be so strange. We go too to Goseneck State park, nice "small" canyon. We come back, put our luggage in the car and leave. We make a stop at Kayenta for breakfast and leave. We take the 98 , nothing to see on that road but it's very nice and pleasant. We enjoy it. We arrive in Page after 3 hours of driving. We make a stop at the gas station and have a look on the map. We still have a lot of road before arriving in Bryce Canyon. We see a small unpaved road which cross Grand Staircase National Monument. We'll see. We cross the Glen Canyon Dam. We arrive at the road. after one or 2 miles we decided to go back on the 89, the road is too bad for our kind of car. We should have rent a SUV ou 4x4 truck.....
We are now back on the 89, we make a stop at Kanab to have a quick lunch in a Subway.
The hot temperatures of the desert are now gone, we're in a nice mountain climate with cool temperatures. there are more trees and more green. We take the road 12 and arrive at our hotel the Bryce View Lodge arround 3.00pm. We take the room , stop for 10mn and go to visit the Park.
Arrived in Brcye Canyon Ntl. Park, at the entrance , we decide to go at the end of the road untill Yovimpa Point. Arrived there , the view is incredible. Gorgeous!!! We make stop, at differents view points. My favorite one is Bryce Point. We'll stay here foir the sunset. The view is Waouhhh!! the colors are changing, it's really magic. We assist at that natural show and go back diner at Ruby's Inn. Finally we go to bed after watching tv for a while.

DAY 5.

We wake up early to go and see the sunrise at Bryce Point. People are already here. Like in G.Canyon, nature is so quiet in the morning. It makes me fell so good. i don't have that in Paris (France), big and dirty city...
The sun is coming. When the firsts lights hit the hoodoos, WAOUHHHHH!!! The best sunrise i've ever seen. No words ot describe, i just take my camera and take some pictures of that amazing moment of pure beauty. Definitivly, do the sunrise at Bryce Point.

After all that emotions, we come back to Ruby's Inn for breakfast.
We leave the park arround 9.30am. We take the 12, and the 89 and the 9. We starting to see the rocks of Zion. We arrive in Zion National Park east Entrance and drive on that very nice road. We make a stop before the entrance of the tunnel because i want to do the Canyon Overlook Trail. it's an easy walk. We arrive and have this wonderful view on the East Lower Canyon. It's so cool... we come back and take the long tunnel to arrive in the Canyon. It's very nice to drive in it. We'll not have time to discover entirely this park but we have alreday a good first look on the park. Maybe an other time. We follow our itinerary untill St Georges where we have lunch. We come back in the desert. the temperature is so hot...
We are now on the US15, i love this highway. I'm surprised to see how people drive quite fast. me too .... This big highway cross a sort of big canyon with huge walls of rock, it's amazing. we're in Nevada and before going to Vegas, i want to see the Valley of Fire. We arrive there in the middle of the afternoon. It was really a hot and hard weather, one thing great, not a lot of tourists with that temperature. i'm fascinated by the scenic road of the park, it's really a place to see in the region. after 2 hours in the park, we finally leave to join Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS!!! Here i am!!!
We have our room at the Flamingo, which is very well located on the strip, it's the most central hotel. And it's historic and cheap so... we have a nice room on the strip, in front of the Caesar's Palace. The veiw is great. I can see the Mirage and the Bellagio.
We have a long break to recuperate from our long drive. the night is coming, i can see the fountains of the Bellagio, from the 22nd floor is really nice to see.
We go out, diner and visit Vegas by night. We gamble some money, have drinks... and go to bed, we're so tired...

DAY 6.

We've been to that city before so we saw a lot already.
We stay in Las Vegas the entire day, we visit some places, walk on the strip, we're going to shop at the Fashion Show Mall and the outlet (i can remember the name of it...)
We did the crazy attractions at the top of the Stratosphere Tower. It's a "must do it" Oh my god!!! ... We enjoy at a swimming pool of an hotel and go out diner with friends ( We have some friends in Vegas), we have a last drink and we come back to the hotel and go to bed.

DAY 7.

We leave from Las Vegas arround 9.00am? we take the highway and small road via Parhump and Shoshone. we arrive in Death Valley National Park in early afternoon. It's so hot. We stop at Bad Water , the lowest point of USA and North America!, walk for a few minutes on the Salt. we make stops and differents points of interest. Devils golf Course, Stovepipe Wells... Very nice and strange Park. We leave the park and arrive next to the Owens Lake (!!) the view on the Sierra Nevada is beautiful. i can see the Whitney Mount. we make a stop on the road 394 to eat something and were arrive in Los Angeles arround 9.00pm. This day was too long...

The days after, we went out for diner, having drinks with our friends, shopping, we visit differents places of the city. We came back to Universal Studios. And the most important, we relaxed.

Thats' it an express tour in the west and a long stay in L.A. I know i haven't seen all the wonders of the west but i saw a lot for a first approach. i selected what i wanted more to visit. I will never forget that road trip. One of my dreams came true. People all along our itinerary, hotel, restaurants were so nice. Thanks to all of my friends, the people with who i had such a pleasant and unforgetable trip.

A bientôt.

Yes nature in your country in really amazing. Take care of it, you have a lot of natural wonders of our planet.

When i was smoking outside the hotel at Grand Canyon before going to bed, i was watching the clearest sky of my entire life. I never saw the Milky Way like that before.
I was so quiet, i would have like all the people in the world to have the same feeling all the time. i was peaceful, in harmony with my planet. No problems, no stress, no fear...
that's what your fabulous Nationals Parks gave me.

Maggi, when you'll go in Bryce, be sure to be at Bryce Point for the sunrise, it's really incredible, it was like rock s were burning. Just to see the light changing, the pink colors changing into Yellow, orange and light red is wonderful, it's more beautiful all the most known paint of Picasso, Renoir and others. Go in summer it's the best time. Septembre was so nice.

My next trip will be San Francisco, Yosemite, and all the North west coast.

I read your trip report with a big smile on my face. You saw one of the most beautiful sections of the US, and one I love too. Yes, nature can be almost overwhelming at times, can't it! That area is so vast, surreal-ly quiet. 9-11, the event, couldn't happen if you were there, do you know what I mean? You are locked away from everything that is evil in the world.

There are some very moving sights in your corner of the world too, though...the sun suddenly shining on Sacre Coeur in the distance when it has been cloudy and drizzly for days. La Tour Eiffel with the sun setting behind it, then the magic light show. The floodlit Conciergerie glowing across the river. Manmade beauty, not natural, but giving the visitor almost the same initial thrill.

I sense you'll be back to explore more. Where to next? Thank you for taking the time to write your trip report, and for reminding us just how lovely things can be right here at home as well!

Malesherbes. I know what you mean.
Sometimes i would like to believe that i'm in a world without all the problems, wars, terrorists, misery...
Such places give me hope that one day, i'll probably die before... people will live such a peaceful world.
I know i leave in a beautiful city but i miss something not living in USA. i can't describe it. Even everything is not "pink" in your country, i think you have something more than us. France is a museum, a beautiful museum...
Anyway each place on earth can have it magic thing. i spent a lot of good times in France and Paris but my best ones are in United States. A sunset in Santa Monica, a sunrise in Bryce Canyon, two off season in a wonderfull house on the beach on Fire Island, look NYC at the Top of the WTC, look at the skyline when the Twin towers were there. Leave the highway 15 and have a drive on a small road in the Mojave desert, touch a thousands years Sequoia Tree... I miss that so much.
Yeah you're right, Manmade beauty is also wonderful. hope that one day it will be in total harmony with nature beauty.
I'm so happy that people enjoy that nature beauty feelings.
;-)

What a truly delightful report. You did some of our favorite things and how nice to see it again through your eyes.

We love the west too, taken nine similar trips (plus many as a kid) and still can't get enough. We're addicted, and now you've inspired me to plan trip # 10!

Thanks so much for posting, and please come back soon!

thanks for your messages. My next trip is Florida in March. but i will stay there just for the beach, the sun and relaxing. weather in France is depressing in France at this time of the year. So i want some sun...
But i started to prepare my next road trip.

San Francisco > Yosemite > LaKe Tahoe > Lassen Nat. park > Crater Lake (sorry i can remember which one is first on the road going to north Crater or Lassen?) > Mount St Helens > mount Rainier > Seattle > Olympic National Park > Portland > Redwood Nat. Park > San francisco.

I plan to stay 3 weeks. i will also do Monterey , Big Sur and other places in the south of San Francisco

"I'm now feeling this impression of liberty and american dream. it's strange and pleasant. it's like i was made to be there at that time. So strange."

This line brought a tear to my eye...I know that feeling exactly.

Thanks for the trip report...it is a wonderful perspective you provide. I proves to me that the emotions that those unique landscapes stimulate are universal to all people...not just Americans.

In return for sharing your wonderful thoughts about our amazing country I'd like to share my images of it with you.

They are here:

I hope you enjoy your trip to Florida

Hi mlmparis! Read your report and like malesherbes, it too put a huge smile on my face. I understand it was an express tour but I just came back from there and posted a trip report with links to pictures. Take a look when you get a chance so you can see Bryce, Escalante, Zion, and other places more intimately like we did because we did the hikes. I hope you get to come back soon and try to do the hikes because like you, I love that same feeling of nature, quite reveries, sincerest moments we'll ever experience.

Here's the link if you want to check out the pictures. You'll see links within the report for the photos.

Hello mlmparis,

I could feel your enthusiasm thru your written words!

Driving from LA to Sequoia and back again in one day? Boy, what a road trip that must have been!

"The sun is now beginning to put fire in the canyon." Wow!

"This big highway cross a sort of big canyon with huge walls of rock." Could this have been the Virgin River Gorge? If so, it is a spectacular drive, with the cliffs so high and the road weaving back and forth.

Bravo! =D>
