Train into NYC

Hi, all!

We reserved a room at the Holiday Inn Martinique. Hopefully it will do.

Anyway, on our last trip to NYC, we parked our car in New Brunswick, NJ and took the train into NYC. We did this because we were seeing a concert in New Brunswick and figured it would be just as easy. I worked great - no NYC trafic and didn't have to worry about finding parking. Now, we are coming in from Eastern Ontario. New Brunswick is probably a lot more South-West then we need to go. Can anyone think of a nice, SAFE city (we are leaving our car there for 4 days) closer to us than New Brunswick where we can catch the train into NYC?

Try Tarrytown NY. It's just across the Hudson from Rte 87 at the base of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Weekday parking at the Metro North train station is $5 or $6 and weekend parking is free. There's a police sub-station building in the parking lot area wher you buy the parking ticket. Trip into NYC is $12-13 or a bit more round trip and takes 30-50 each way (express or local train).

Thanks! However, and I didn't specify this before, we would like something that arrived into Penn Station. Any other suggestions?

If you want to use the train and arrive at Penn Station it's not as simple. Most (not all but most) of the NJ Transit trains originating in upper north Jersey in towns convenient to a person coming in from Ontario all go to Hoboken. One must then transfer to a PATH train (subway under the Hudson) to the 33rd Street Herald Square station (about one long block from Penn Station). NJ Transit trains that go into Penn Station direct are limited to the MOntclair-Boonton line unless you drive down the Garden State Parkway (GSP) to Woodbridge/Iselin area or thereabouts. You could take Rte 87 South, get on Rte 17 S into NJ and then take GSP to Rte 46 West and use the station in Little Falls. Not sure what the parking price or availability is but it's a nice enough area. The problem is that traaffic at the final tolls on 87 South gets horrendous on weekends and driving that far into NJ seems like an extra chore. A cab from GCT to Penn should be under $10 incl generous tip.

Since you are NOT seing a concert in NJ or anywhere else, why don't you park in Manhattan? Otherwise, everyone would have to pay to get INTO Manhattan, so you don't really save THAT much - plus when you leave, either you all have to go on a train somewhere with your luggage, or someone
goes, gets the car, then comes into Manhattan to get everyone - either way, not easy nor cheap.
One of the posters, Owen, who gave you advise, found a cheap garage in Manhattan:
"Found a garage on 43rd St between 10th and 11th Ave - it's secured indoor parking and open 24 hours - it's REALLY easy to get to the Lincoln Tunnel exit when leaving. $16 incl all taxes for 24 hours"
That's cheap enough to park it and forget it - BEST thing to do!

You will be probably coming down on the NYS Thruway (I87). Get off at exit 16. Take route 17 south and you will see signs for Harriman train station. No permit is necessary to park at the station and you can legally park overnight. In 60 minutes this train will have you in Hoboken, NJ. A quick ride on the PATH and you'll be a block away from Penn Station.
