Tampa with Teens Take 2!!

My cheerleaders qualified for nationals so we are off to Tampa!! I had a really hard time booking rooms. We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express Rocky Point. Anyone familiar with this hotel? And is there anything nearby?

Not familiar with the Holiday Inn but have stayed at the Doubletree at Rocky Point. This is in a cluster of hotels/restaurants. Rocky Point is at east end of the causeway between Tampa and Clearwater. I don't remember the names of the eateries but I do remember it was a nice variety.

About how long is the drive from the hotel to the SunDome?

And how far is it from Pier 60?

That hotel is fine. My husband's former hotel, Grand Hyatt, is one stop light away so I'm very familiar with the area and it's a nice section in that you are on the uppermost part of Tampa Bay. Dolphin get up into the area and if you're lucky, you'll see some. There are a couple of restaurants in close proximity--they will enjoy Bahama Breeze for sure. Rusty Pelican is across Courtney Campbell. Both are on the water. You are 40 minutes from Pier 60...a straight shot out hwy 60. It is a drive to the Sun Dome...probably 25 minutes, but you are in a far better area, more central to all there is to do in Tampa and the beaches. It'll only take you 5-10 minutes to and from the airport too. That is far preferable, IMHO, to staying out by USF!

I'm so glad to hear it's in a nice area. All of the online reviews were favorable. And Holiday Inn's are usually pretty reliable.

Rocky Point is great. Watch for dolphins in the little lagoon-like area in front of Bahama Breeze. I don't think it's 40 minutes to Pier 60 from there - 25 minutes maybe. Of course if you are going on a Saturday morning it will take longer since alot of people will be going out there. I just took a visitor to Pier 60 from that area mid-morning on a work day and it took about 25 minutes top. Clearwater Beach is beautiful and the evening festival held every night is a lot of fun, your girls will love it.

Here are my trip plans...please comment.

We arrive on Thursday afternoon. Go check into hotel. Take the girls to Pier 60. They should enjoy the beach and music. And it will be later in the day so we shouldn't get any sunburns.

Friday: We have to go to the SunDome and then practice. After that, I was thinking about Tampa Grand Prix. Then end the day with a pool/pizza party. 10pm curfew.

Saturday: Competition!!! Not sure what time we will be done. Any ideas about a place to celebrate afterwards?

Sunday: go home.

Congrats! When are nationals? (I live near USF so I want to avoid the area...)

For the celebration, you might want to consider the Channelside area. It is closer to your hotel than to USF. There isn't much to do in the USF area as far as fun places but there are a lot of casual restaurants. Channeside has restaurants and a place called Splitsville which is a fun/upscale bowling alley and there is also an IMAX movie theater there.

Have fun!

Cheer Nationals are on Saturday, December 9th at the SunDome. Football Nationals run the entire week before that, but they are in Lakeland.
