suggestions needed for quick 25th anniversary trip winter 2005
Hi all,
My husband and I are planning a trip for our 25th anniversary. We can travel in January, February, or March of next year and are leaning towards March for the warmer weather. Unfortunately, we can only get away for a 4 day weekend, and since we would like to minimize our getting there time and maximize our being there time, we are considering destinations in the southeast U.S. (we live in metro Detroit). So far we're thinking of New Orleans, St. Augustine, Charleston, or Savannah. We're not into spending time on the beach, so we're just looking for temperatures warm enough to require no more than a light coat, at least in the daytime. What we like: a walkable city with lots of historical and cultural sites. We don't really care much about nightlife or gourmet dining. My husband has been to New Orleans but neither of us has been to any of the other locations. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

It is weird! I am planning a getaway trip in January for my wife's 50th birthday. I am considering the same ideas except other months are not an option. Our interests are absolutely the same too!
How is Charlston in January? And New Orleans? We've been to St. Augustine.
We live in Cincinnati, OH. Not as cold as in Detroit, but dreary enough to look for warmer places.
Any help would be appreciated.

Charleston is indeed lovely in the spring. I've been down the last two (albeit at Easter) and loved it both times. I've been travelling to the Charleston area every year for the past 25+. I'm also in metro Detroit, so feel free to email me directly at [email protected] if you have any other questions. There are tons of threads about accomodations and restaurants there with wonderful suggestions. The restaurant situation is soooo much better than Detroit; it's disappointing to come home.

We spent 3 days in NO for our 15th in Feb 2002. Loved every second of it. We ate great, went to the horsetrack, shopped, stayed out late. Lots of fun. Stayed at the Omni Royal Orleans which has a great location. Should have booked a king room with a balcony as our queen room was a bit tight. Can't wait to go back again. 4 days would be great there as we didn't have enough time to do all that we would have liked.

I live in Charleston and would definitely recommend it over the other cities in the South you're considering...and not just because I live here. I've spent a good bit of time in each of the other cities and just think Charleston has much more to offer. As to timing to visit Charleston, January can be pretty iffy...many times it rains a good bit and can be pretty chilly (though nothing compared to the weather in MI...so it may be okay for you then). It is definitely a time when the rates at hotels are good as there are generally not many tourists here then. February gets better and March would be a good time...just make sure its not the week before or after Easter.
