I'm traveling with my daughter to visit a college in Washington, DC. I'll have a day and evening to myself while she visits the campus. I definitely want to visit the National Gallery of Art and am looking for other suggestions. I do love art and history and textiles. I'll be staying in DuPont Circle, so getting around should not be a problem.

I'm also looking for a good place for dinner near DuPont Circle, good for a woman eating alone. Reasonable but not cheap.

The place for you is the Textile Museum, 2320 S Street NW, it's even in the Dupont Circle area, walk up Connecticut to S street and turn left.

Good luck to your daughter -- my daughter and I were visiting colleges in DC at this time last year and will return late next week for a new-students orientation.

That way you can find out about all of the museums to see which ones interest you. If you love art - DC is a great place to be - and they are free!

I'd also suggest walking around and seeing the monuments - Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Vietnam etc, and the White House. Hitting a museum or two and then walking around to see these would be a great way to fill up a day and enjoy the (hopefully) spring-like weather.

There are lots of restaurants around Dupont Circle. If you want casual, Pizzeria Paradiso is excellent and reasonable, but there are lots of others - just look at menus to see what appeals to you.

At a minimum, visit the Vietnam Vets Memorial and the Lincoln Memborial.

If you're into textiles, you must see the one of the featured exhibitions at the Corcoran, The Quilts of Gee's Bend. It's fantastic. There's a Cosi just up the street from the Corcoran...great salads and sandwiches. I agree with Anonymous that you'll enjoy Textile Museum. Between the two above and the National Gallery, you'll have more than enough to fill a days touring.

The Breadline is 1/2 block beyond Cosi' (17th&Penn) - worth the "trip", IMO. Best sandwiches in DC, salads, soups, etc. Well chosen wine by the glass is practically wholesale - don't skip the $1 creme brulee!

Hi penel, no, we're not going to American U. My daughter was very excited to visit them because of her intention to major in history and because of all the interesting internships and year-abroad opportunities that AU offers, but when we saw it in person we didn't like it at all. But everyone has different criteria, I hope your visit is successful.
