St. Petersberg activities with toddler
Hi,
We're heading to St. Petersberg in a couple of weeks with our 2 year old (and Grandpa)! Any advice on toddler-friendly activities that we shouldn't miss--aquarium, etc.? We're staying at the Tradewinds Sandpiper and hoping it's better than some of the posts I've read . . . .

You may want to try the Great Explorations Museum in downtown St. Pete, it's on the other side of town from the beach, but you can easily kill 2 hours there and the kids love it. I think it was somewhere around 5 bucks to get in. Cut and paste this webpage for more info... http://www.greatexplorations.org/home.htm
My girls did not really enjoy the aquarium until they were a little older, maybe around 4 or 5. The aquarium is ok, but I would not put it in the "don't miss" category for a toddler. The pier in St. Pete can be fun sometimes, there's an aquarium of sorts on the 2nd floor, it's nowhere near the quality of the Florida Aquarium over in Tampa, but it's free and probably just as impressive to a 2 year old.
Maybe look into a dolphin cruise, those are pretty cheap and if you aren't used to seeing dolphins and seagulls from where you live, I suppose it could be entertaining. Gramps might even like it. Cut and paste this link for more info. http://www.hubbardsmarina.com/sights.htm

The Lowry Park Zoo is great for kids! It is about 45 mins - 1 hour (near Busch Gardens) from SP Beach. It is small and well laid out. There's an aviary where you can feed the birds, a petting zoo, and neat fountains the toddlers can walk on top of, so bring a change of clothes, cause your little one will love that. There is also a pirate ship which goes on afternoon cruises out of Clearwater Beach, which my little nephew loved. However any two year old's favorite thing to do will be dig in the sand right in front of your hotel - easy!
P.S. Check out lunch or dinner at Sea Critters - south of the Don CeSar hotel - baby can feed the catfish on the dock there, and the food is good!

The Lowry Park zoo has a manatee exhibit where you can see manatees in rehab. This is a wonderful exhibit that has glass sides so you get a really great view up close. It's about 40 minutes from the Sandpiper to Lowry Park in Tampa.
Be sure to go to Sunken Gardens on 4th Street. Great Explorations has moved there.
