Spring or Fall for Yosemite
Would like to plan a trip to Yosemite - we are 5o and love scenic hiking and maybe combine that with a couple of days around San Francisco. 1- we have a choice of April/May or September - any opinions on that. and 2 - how many days should we allow for Yosemite?

Definitely Spring. The winter snow run-off will insure that the waterfalls are at their peak. In Fall some of the falls are hardly more than dribbles. You should see Yosemite at its grandest if possible. As for how long to stay, depends on how much you like to hike. 3 days at least to take it all in. As for me, I would live on the valley floor if they would let me. It is one of the most beautiful spots on Earth.

The waterfalls alone are reason to go in the spring.
However, there are a couple advantages to going in September, both weather related:
1. It'll probably be warmer.
2. All the roads will definitely be open, which may not be the case in April/May.
Either way, Yosemite is grand. And, yes, spend at least 3 days there.

I think the first weekend of June is prime because of the waterfalls, but as Howard says there is not bad season. Even winter is lovely with snow in the valley and the great dinners they have at the Ahwanhee. Certainly plan 3 days and preferably, not over a weekend. Weekends are better spent in SF where there's lots to do and the other tourists don't bother you as much. Have a great trip.
