SF or SD for 7/4

I am flying into LAX on July 1 or 2 and then plan to travel to SF or SD for July 4.

Which city is best for July 4? Where should I stay for the best atmosphere and to see the fireworks? Any other tips for the occasion?

I am looking at high level boutique or 5 star accommodation.

Thanks

Vote for San Diego.

Hotel Del is the best to stay: but my advice in order to get the best beach experience at Hotel Del book the Beach Village Villas

http://www.delbeachvillage.com/

Then call the Concierge for the Beach Village and ask them where to go and WHEN to see the fireworks....San Diego BAy has fabulous multi station simultaneous fireworks. They will likely tell you to head EARLY for shopping and dinner to Coronado Ferry LAnding, other end of Coronado from Hotel Del & Beach Village. Suggest Il Fornio for dinner...and ask Beach Village Concierge to make resv for window seat (in advance) if you are planning to see fireworks from dinner table. (Peohes also has bay & fireworks views but the food is not good.)

Tough choice - but do remember being in SF about 10 years ago for 7/4 - great fireworks, but we nearly froze to death, stupidly thinking all of California in July was warm.

I'd vote for San Diego on the Fourth of July if you want to see fireworks, or San Francisco if you want to see fog. I think the last Fourth that had clear weather was about four years ago. Usually the fireworks shows in San Francisco resemble big glowing clouds.

San Diego Bay has a fantastic firework show and is considered the best in the state. You can view the show from Coronado Island, downtown, Harbor Island etc or by boat.

Coronado Island has a parade, music and other fun festivities going on that day that have a small town charm to it.

As for the Villas at The Del, I think staying during the 4th would be a pretty miserable experience. The boardwalk is packed with people non-stop and you'd feel like strangers were in your room the entire time. I like people watching and crowds but not near me 24/7. Maybe you would enjoy it.

SanDiego.org is a great resource for planning a trip.
