Sedona vacation tips
My husband and I want to go to Sedona next year. What is the best time of year to go? How long should we stay and what are the highlights to do within a two hour radius. We are thinking of renting a home--some look beautiful on line--any suggestions. We may travel alone or with one other couple--we are in our late 50's. Thanks

Lots of info on this site about Sedona. Just search.
It is a wonderful, mystical place. A week is not too long, especially if you want a day-trip to Grand Canyon. For a minimum, I would stay 4 days.
Sedona is an easy 2 hr drive from Phoenix. On the way you pass Montezumas Castle, just off I 17, well worth a visit. Nearby is Jerome, Verde Canyon Rail Road also worth visits.
For Sedona, hikes (all degrees of difficulty) and Pink Jeep tours or mystical tours are wonderful. Drive up Rt 89 thru Oak Creek Canyon. Great restaurants and shopping.

First, where do you live? If from the frozen north, spring or fall in central AZ would be best. April or October. Midsummer is just too hot. Within a radius: the Grand Canyon (south rim), Wupatki, Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, Montezuma Castle, Verde Canyon Railway. Two state parks: Red Rock State Park and Slide Rock State Park (within Oak Creek Canyon). Go visit the old mining town of Jerome, a hour's drive west. Take a jeep ride. Ride horses. Contact the Sedona Chamber of Commerce for their free booklet, "Experience Sedona." Full of other ideas, places to see, places to eat, etc. Plenty of rentals available. Warning: you may catch "red rock fever" and never leave.

We were there in April a year ago, and the weather was perfect - mid 70's during the day while we were there.
The Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour was amazing. The other thing we did that we really loved was the trip on the Verde Canyon Railroad. We spent all of our time on the outdoor car, as the weather was so nice. Each rail car has an outdoor gondola car attached, so you can be inside or outside as you wish. You can learn more about it at their web site: http://www.verdecanyonrr.com/

I was there in early June this year. The weather was warm but not unbearable. The second day started partly cloudy and got more overcast as the day went on (I guess rthat was good.
I hike from morning to evening both days.
I thought the most scenic were Broken Arrow, Fay Canyon, Boynton Canyon Vista (only the Vista) and one of the Bell Rock area hikes.
Borken Arrow also has a parallel road maintained by Pink Jeep in partnership with the NPS. It was funny to watch the Pink Jeeps come by as I hiked and look at the terrorized passengers.
Once they realized they weren't going to fall over a cliff they were able to laugh.
I stayed at the Best Western Inn of Sedona and couldn't recommend it more. Great location, breakfast included and my room had one door to the parking lot and the other to the 3rd floor patio with a view of Chimney Rock.
Don't miss the Crescent Moon picnic area with a sunset view of Cathedral Rock across Oak Creek. Absolutely amazing!!!
USNR lives there so he knows of what he writes.
I don't know about "never leaving" but you can definitely catch "Red Rock fever".
