My hubby and I are driving from northeast PA to Charlotte, NC in September. We have no time limits. Want to see off the beaten path areas and scenery. Suggestions please.

Get off I-81 onto I-64 to Front Royal VA. Front Royal is the northern entrance to the Skyline Drive.
It's up to you to decide if you want to continue onto the Blue Ridge Parkway or exit back to I-81 near Staunton.
Another scenic place in the Shenandoah Valley is Natural Bridge.

If you haven't been to Gettysburg, do spend some time there. Then drive down to Harper's Ferry before heading south on Blue Ridge Pkwy/Skyline drive.

Another fun and interesting stop near Charlotte would be Winston-Salem. Visit Old Salem, have some great food, AAA baseball.
