Saying Goodbye

I have answered many 'traveling with the dog' questions on this forum. Our travel companion, an 18 y/o Westie, went to the peaceful green meadows of doggie heaven on Aug 30th. He had travelled to Mexico, Canada, and 40 states. The last time we were on the Atlantic he turned and looked at the ocean a long time, as if to say 'Goodbye'. As a young dog, he detested cats, in his elder years a small tabby was his eyes, she would carefully bump him back toward the house when she felt he was to far out in the yard, often leaving her meal to do so. Today is the first morning she has not howled mournfully. A member of our family is gone but not forgotten. Travel related? Puppy was a mighty traveller, and deserved a mention here.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your lovely tribute brought tears to my eyes.

It sounds like your sweet Westie lived a long full life and gave you much happiness.

I must confess I have no animals and not that much of a dog lover, but a college friend of mine who's a part-time writer has been sending me chapter of a book he's trying to get published. It's a wonderful account of how he and a friend circled the US in a pick-up truck with a dog. The dog is the star of the book. Yep, dogs can be great travelers.

My sympathies for your loss.

Arkansasnurse, I am so sorry for your loss. These puppies are the best friends we'll ever have; (I have a 15 year old Cairn, and we lost another at the age of 15.......) My heart goes out to you as your little buddy has made his final journey home.

Arkansas Nurse,
Yes, they are members of the family, aren't they? I am sorry for your loss and for your mourning cat as well; she too has lost her companion. I am glad your Westie got to "see the continent" with you, and I'm sure you have a ton of memories to make you smile. Take care.

I am sorry for your loss. When we lost ours we were comforted by this thought:

'I heard somebody define heaven once as a place where, when you get there, all the dogs you ever loved run to greet you.' Robert B. Parker

I for some reason am bawling like a baby as I send my fondest condolences. Your loss has obviously struck a chord with me. I send you all the best. May he have endless great romps in heaven

I love that quote LDLee. My DH is a big Parker fan. Now I know why.

I'm so sorry, and I'll be giving my kitty and puppy extra hugs when I get home and be thinking of you.

Anyone who has ever loved and lost a pet can relate to the pain you are feeling right now.

That's a very long time for a doggie to live, and it sounds like he was better-traveled than most people.

Your fodors friends will be thinking of you...

I'm so sorry!

Having gone through the same thing you did a couple of years ago I can say that the only thing that healed my heart was a new addition to my family from the pound.

My sweet baby will never be forgotten or replaced but it certainly healed my heart to have a new love.

Bless you honey and here's a hug from me!

My sincere condolences.

It's a huge loss and one with which I can empathize. I lost my Wheaton two years years ago and it was gut wrenching. He came into my life before I met my husband and had children; he was 19 when he passed away. Beau loved to travel even though he sometimes got carsick!

Wagonwheel, what a beautiful, beautiful saying! It made me go over, pick up my sweet old Cairn and cuddle and kiss him. Arkansasnurse, I hope it helps you to know how many friends you have here who truly understand how you're feeling! Bless you...
