San Francisco to Denver

We will be in San Francisco for a week but would like to extend our vacation for probably 2 weeks to see more of the west...we are thinking of renting a car and driving to Denver. Is there anything that we can look forward to seeing between SF and Denver. We have been to Reno and Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. I don't want to waste too much time on the road where there is nothing much to see. Any ideas?

If you go south you can visit Taos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Sedona, and Las Vegas--for starters.

On a more direct route you could visit Colorado National Monument, Arches National Park, and then you could drive famous Route 50 (the loneliest highway in the world) across Nevada to Reno.

However, going the shortest way the drive is 1,300 miles. If you don't want to waste time, you should fly and spend your time driving Highway 1.

Would you be interested in taking a train? Amtrak's ride is beautiful I've heard.

My family did this trip in 1992 and we saw some incredible country. We spend 2 weeks on the road, including 3 days in Colorado Springs visiting family. Our trip was basically a loop through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and back to California.

Here is our basic itinerary:

Santa Cruz to Reno, Reno to Elko, Elko to Sandy, Utah. This first bit, once we got over the Sierras, was pretty boring and the only reason we stopped in Elko was because my dad worked on a ranch there at one time and he wanted to see it. If I were taking this trip again, I would drive to Utah over 2 days rather than 3, staying the night in whatever town made sense. The Ruby Mountains outside of Elko were pretty and definitely worth a stop. The salt flats were very interesting - we started across them late in the day and drove through the night to get across to avoid the heat of the day. We saw an incredible sunset.

Next we saw some things in Utah - Green River, UT was a nice little town that we enjoyed. Other highlights were Arches National Monument near Moab and Timpanogas Caves. I wish we had more time to see Zion and Bryce and when I go back, I will make a point to see them. The country was magnificent there, unlike anything I had ever seen.

In Colorado we stayed in Glenwood Springs, which we loved. We only had 1 night there, but wished we had more. Neat town in a gorgeous location. Leadville was a fun place - the drive up there was beautiful because we were so high up. We rode a steam train there through some really beautiful country. In Colorado Springs we went to the top of Pikes Peak - definitely recommend that. We also visited a couple forts, but I can't remember where they were.

Denver is a nice city. We visited downtown, the capitol building and the mint.

After leaving Denver we headed north to Wyoming. We went through Laramie and Cheyanne and the Snowy Mountain range. We saw buffalo on the open range. Laramie was a nice town that we enjoyed. The Snowy Mountains were really beautiful - on the trip my mom decided she wanted to move there - LOL.

The trip was awhile ago, so I don't have a ton of details. It was definitely a scenic trip though.
