I like the Betelnut a lot, fusion type great food, more asian influenced. The cocktails are also worth trying!
It's not cheap but reasonable. Do a reservation if you want to eat at prime time. For early dinner it should not be a problem to get a table.

I don't see the point of mentioning any restaurant ecoli until you let us know about how much you want to spend per meal (and if that amount includes tip and tax and drinks or not) and what type of food you are interested in. As sf7307 said there are a lot of excellent restaurants in San Francisco.
Have you checked out the restaurants in Belden Place that suze posted?

Well again until you state your preferance in what type of food
ecoli it seems a waste of time to make restaurant suggestions.
Here is the website for the food section of the SF Chronicle where you can check out restaurants. Hope that is a help to you. And do have a lovely time in SF!

One of my favorite restaurants, Kokkari, although in some spots it is marked as $$$
www.kokkari.com - you can look at menu and decide
for drinks and music, I like Top of the Mark, - there is a $5 cover charge, fabulous views from windows all around - look on their site for who is playing

Thanks everybody and thanks LoveItaly...by the way, I'm from Italy, where are you from? I just wanted to have general suggestions on where to go. I got it. One more question, a place to go after dinner, to listen to some live music (jazz i.e.)?

Yoshi's is the place to go for jazz - either in SF or Oakland

Tadich's Grill for the quintessential SF meal, try their sand dabs or cioppino.
We enjoyed Top of the Mark for a drink and dessert. You can take the cable car there from Union Square. A ride on the cars at night is really magical.

Hello again ecoli. I was born and lived all of my life in the SF/Bay Area until a few years ago. I now live just a bit north/east of there in the southern end of the Sacramento Valley.
What area of Italy are you from ecoli? I have spent so much time in Italy and have so many Italian friends in Italy. My son-in-law was born and lived in Rome until ten years ago when he came here to Northern California. All his family members are still in Rome or in the mountains east of Rome.
Have you been to San Francisco before or is this your first visit? All my friends in Italy who have been here over the years absolutely love San Francisco.
