San Fran Weather and Hotel Recommendation
What is the weather like in San Fransisco mid August?
Also, need a recommendation for a really great hotel! It is for a 50th birthday celebration, and would like a great property for 2 of us... thanks

Have you considered checking the many online sources for weather statistics?
There are tons of hotel recommendations on this forum. If you include your actual dollar amount, you may get some replies.
If it is so special, just pick the nicest hotel in SF and go for it.

June and July are often our coldes months in SF. It can be foggy and wet for most of the morning, then clear up for an hour. August can be the same, but usually it is a better month. It's certainly not shorts weather, but it's great for visiting and walking around. I would say by mid to late September we have the nicest weather, Indian summer.

Any chance you can put the trip off to September? August is unpredictable (although there is much much less fog now than there was when I first moved here 37 years ago), but September is often gorgeous weather.
As for the hotel, 1) what is your budget, 2) do you like boutique hotels or big hotels or small hotels, new vs. old, elegant vs. funky?, 3) what kind of neighborhood would you prefer (shopping district, residential neighborhood, near the water)?
I note that you haven't asked for restaurant recommendations yet, but San Francisco is a diners' paradise. If you choose to stay in the Financial District or Embarcadero areas (Hyatt Regency, Mandarin Oriental, Hotel Vitale and others), you will have many excellent restaurants in walking distance.

Stu, I meant to finish that sentence by saying that it wasn't Twain who said it. I remember a thread from here that showed it but I couldn't.
I definitely agree with holding off until September as its generally better weather.

Another recommendation for waiting until September. As others have said, August is generally chilly - not the coldest weather of the year, but definitely not what you think of as summer weather. Highs in the 60s with a chilly wind is common. Sometimes the sun is out and sometimes we temperatures get into the 70s or even 80s, but not usually.
I live an hour from SF and temperatures get into the triple digits during the summer at my house - we go to SF to get a nice respite from the heat. One of the most lovely sights is driving up the peninsula and seeing the glorious fog spilling over the mountains as we get closer to SF.
September is less foggy because the interior of the state starts to cool, which means that the inversion layer conditions go away - interior heat causes the coast to fog up.

Come in September, you will be so much happier with the weather, which can get down right hot at that time of the year...or not. The later in Sept the better IMO.
Hotel Monaco is a nice hotel and it has one of my favorite restaurants in it, Grand Cafe. Good choices, have a great time here.

The Mark Hopkins has wonderful views, a short walk to the main attractions, but, it is up a big hill. THey seem to have rooms in your price range.
