San Diego Clothing Help (woman)

Dear Friends,

This question is for current San Diego natives.

I am attending a sort of pre wedding event in San Diego, that will, essentially, last all day from brunch through dinner out. Most people are from SD, and I know that they dress up far more than I am used to -- make up, nice shoes, younger women will be in sun dresses. We won't be going anyplace really fancy but I need to be well enough dressed to go to a somewhat nicer dinner restaurant. Someplace with tablecloths for example.

There will be a lot of standing and walking. I am late middle aged and recently ill so I need reasonably comfortable shoes. Not totally clunky but not heels either.

Oh, and it's next week.

Can I wear very nice Bermuda shorts and a polo shirt?

Khaki capris and the same?

White capris and a navy and white sleeveless dressy tank/shell (crew neck, nice material)?

I own these and have good shoes to go with them. (I have recently lost a lot of weight so do not own much that isn't jeans or work clothes).

I would greatly appreciate any responses! (If I have to go buy something I will have to do it this weekend)

TF

My sister lives in San Diego and I've been to wedding events there so I'll count myself qualified. Disregard the rest if I'm not.

While I believe the rule, better to be underdressed than over-dressed, I think both the shorts and capris are too far under. You can't go wrong with full-length white pants and they should be easy to find. I suggest a nice cotton tunic with sleeves, maybe 3/4 sleeves, to go with it. Possibly also white with a nice scarf. Nice earrings, if you have them, and good flat shoes and summer bag. All white has the advantage of going with any accessories you already have that are summery, and since it isn't the wedding itself, if you care about such things, not a problem being the bride's color.

That's my 2 cents. Have fun, whatever you decide to wear.

If the navy tank truly is dressy, and the white capris not overly casual (I have linen ones with dr3essy trim), I think that might work. Add a beautiful scarf to snazz it up a bit.
Do you have any friends who aee going with whom you could discuss clothing?

Good advice above -- my 2¢ :

>>Can I wear very nice Bermuda shorts and a polo shirt?>Khaki capris and the same?could be OK but I suspect not you khaki ones black or possibly white if nice fabric. Again, polo shirt - no.

>>White capris and a navy and white sleeveless dressy tank/shell (crew neck, nice material)?

<White capris and a navy and white sleeveless dressy tank/shell>
Yes, especially if you already have shoes to match that you can stand to be in all day.
Signed,
Not an SD Native (but have lived in CA)

P.S. I am in principle opposed to buying clothes and shoes for a wedding that you can never wear again, or would be uncomfortable in, or both. But honestly, that last outfit sounds perfect. The others are too underdressed.

I live in San Diego. The white capris with navy and white top would be the best choice fron those you have listed. It's quite hot here now, and will be a little more humid than usual next week. You might need a very light cardigan/shrug or a loose blouse you could wear over the top to deal with the ac in a restaurant, just because you're sitting not moving around.

Do you know what you will be doing in between brunch and dinner?

Wow! Thanks for the responses. To be clear, this is not a wedding, just a get together for families to meet. The bride will be in a sundress. The groom will probably be in shorts and a polo and drink beer out of a bottle LOL. (Kids!) We might well end up in a tiny Mexican place for dinner, or we could end up in a nicer restaurant -- hence my quandary.

I love the idea of long white pants and I would wear them other times. I live in nice dressy sleeveless tops (usually JNY or Calvin Klein because I know they fit and can buy online on sale LOL) with my suits, so I have a ton of them to choose from. But the shoes that I have that are both nice and comfortable are either black (so black top or navy) or the new multi-metal (sort of sage and pewter maybe) which is why I thought of khakis. I would wear full length khakis in a flash but have searched high and low and NO one is carrying any that I can wear.

As for a wrap, my personal "thing" is a couple of soft lightweight scarves I brought back from Morocco, so I'll probably bring one of those. Might stow a dressy sweater away in the car just in case?? (zip up or jacket style?)

Again, thanks so much for the help! I know exactly what to wear to a professional interview, or how to pack for a month in a carry on, LOL, but this one stumped me!

San Diego local here, too !

I think the capris are just fine. I went to a party / get together on Sat and most ladies were in Capris, sundresses both long and short. Lots of sleeveless tops ! I don't think I really saw too many long pants and there were 130 people over the whole afternoon into evening.

It sounds like you have what to wear already and don't need to go shopping!

I took a shawl for the evening when it cooled down.

Another vote for the white capris and navy/white top that you already own!

I'm from San Diego also. Your white Capris and navy/white tank sound perfect. Do heed Barbara's advice about bringing along a something warm for the evening.

It's been getting chilly.

I forgot to say that I was one of the ladies in capris. Mine were light pink with some scroll-y pattern in white. White top.

What you have described I think you'll be fine!

I enjoy wearing a nice pair of capris if the event isn't too formal and the weather is cooperative.
Wearing heels is different question entirely. If only I could fit in my wife's size fives.

We're supposed to be having more humidity and higher temps this week, with the slight possibility of thunderstorms.

In general, I'd say "late Middle Aged" women should not wear sleeveless anything. IMO it doesn't matter if your upper arms are still OK, its just not flattering anymore. cover up with 3/4 length sleeves or a sweater.

I'm afraid I agree completely with kleroux, and will add legs. Why I suggested long pants and sleeves, though I wasn't explicit on why I thought so. Thanks, kleroux. I'm including myself, 70, have always thought only the armpits of the very young were worthy of uncovering, and now any part of my extremities, though sandals are forgiven for comfort's sake. The discomfort with my tired skin showing more than outweighs any gains. I fully realize many woman don't mind. I do though, as it pertains to myself.

To each her own. Just don't project your body shame onto others, please.

It isn't shame, it's esthetics. And as I said, "I fully realize many woman don't mind. I do though, as it pertains to myself."

If you are going to be outdoors and it's very warm out I don't think any woman should have a problem with sleeveless. The party I was at had lots of women in sleeveless. It was warm. Never even thought twice about the fact they were of an age and sleeveless.

Outdoors + Warm with sun shining = sleeveless no problem in my eyes.
