San Antonio Riverwalk vs San Diego Gaslamp Quarter
Trying to decide where to go for a trip in December. We went to San Antonio last year and loved it. Friends told us about how much fun they had in San Diego last year. Right now packages to San Diego are about $300.00 cheaper. Have you been to both? Which one did you like better?
Thanks

I have been to San Antonio once and to San Diego many times and I think there's a lot more to see and do in San Diego. San Antonio, IMHO, is a 1-2 day town (in terms of sightseeing). You could easily fill 3-5 days in the San Diego area.

I lived in San Antonio for 20 years, visited San Diego several times. San Diego is a great destination, I would go back in a heart beat. Not sure what the weather is like that time of year--once we went mid-January and it was cold and rainy but that may have been a fluke. December in SA is a busy time with the holiday river parade, Alamo Bowl, etc., which is why prices may be higher...in August, however, you can score a great deal! ;-)

Just came back from 8 days in SD, whereas my last trip to SA was years and I mean years ago. There's lots to do in SD, besides the gaslamp area which is really nothing special, though I have to admit I was there during the day, it may be a whole lot different at night.
Weather in SD in Dec can be hit or miss, warm, balmy days or cold and rainy. It just depends on your luck. (AnnMarie_C: Rainy and cold in Jan is not atypical weather, not a fluke. A fluke in my humble opinion would be warm and balmy.)
We did a lot of the tourist things and even in 8 days we did not run out of things to entertain us, though we are slow travelers and don't pack a lot in to a day. I loved Balboa Park and we spent three or four days wandering around and visiting museums, a day in La Jolla, another in Coronado, a third in the Historic Old Town. Longer than that would be stretching it, unless you enjoy the beach, then several weeks would be delightful if the weather cooperates.

The weather in San Diego these days is always hit and miss. I had to wear a jacket today.
December can be very nice. A little cold, sometimes some rain but you can wait a day and more than likely it'll clear up. We've eaten Christmas dinner on the patio some years. Other years we've sat inside with the heat on. Bear in mind, we only use our heat a few days out of the year.
Even if there's a bit of rain, you can arrange your time and do indoor activities on the rainy days.

I would save San Antonio for the summer. We have done it a couple of times and then head to the Schlitterbahn which is an hour away. It's the best waterpark that I have been to by far. I have been to most of the ones on the travel channels top ten waterparks. It is rated #1 on that show as well.

I was thinking of this thread today in late May as I drove the streets of San Diego with my windshield wipers on b/c it was raining. (Okay, maybe heavy misting, but it's cold too.) Go where you please, you never know about the weather.
