San Antonio

Hi-We are planning our first trip to Texas in March. We are thinking of going to San
Antonio. We have 3 children and were wondering if anyone had a good suggestion for a hotel in the riverwalk area. How are the Homewood Suites on West Market St.? Also, what is the weather like in early March? Any fun suggestions? thanks for info.

San Antonio is an excellent first trip to Texas. It is fun, has several amusement parks (Six Flags, Sea World), the riverwalk, missions, history & the manana attitude. You will find both Mexican and German influence. Because they have a good "trolley" bus system in downtown, you don't have to stay right on the river but there are nice hotels in reasonable price ranges. Be sure to try Mi Tierra (institution for locals & guests) or La Margarita, both in the Mercado (Market) for Mexican; Paisanos for Italian. Early March could be anything from 40's to 70's. Check weather.com as it gets closer. Try www.traveltex.com and the San Antonio Chamber site. If you are there on Sunday, go to Mission San Jose for the noon Mariachi Mass. The Jazz at the Landing on the Riverwalk is great but not for little ones. Of course, the Alamo & all around the riverwalk. The zoo is nice, several museums (circus, art, Texan culture). If you have any time left, just an hour north is the Hill Country with the Texas White House of LBJ & Fredericksburg with its German influence. You will have a great time!! Texans are very friendly

message: Thanks Linda for the information. Everything sounds so much fun. The only decision left to make is where to stay. Know of any great places? (I accidently sent two messages to the board so disregard the other one or vice versa). Thanks-all info is very helpful. We are coming from CA and were wondering if 6 nights are enough to get the feel of the place.

Karen,

Our family of 5 (3 kids) stayed at the Homewood Suites on the Riverwalk in Nov. '99 and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very reasonable and we were so glad we stayed right on the river -- the better to soak up the ambiance!

We had a nice suite which had space for us all (living room, kitchenette, BR and large bathroom). The complimentary evening "happy hour" provided lots of munchies for us all and the morning breakfasts were great, too, especially because the dining area overlooks the riverwalk.

The hotel is a few blocks from the "main" riverwalk restaurant area, which allowed convenience as well as a bit of distance from the late night action. You're on the trolley route, too, but just about everything is walking distance.

Don't know if it will be warm enough for the rooftop pool while you're there, but we enjoyed it in November.

It was a great trip -- a unique and memorable place to visit! Have a great time!
