Will be travelling to NYC with a young family in a few days and the Ritz Carlton at Battery Park is offering a great deal on weekend rooms. The only problem is that it is down at the tip of Manhattan so I was wondering if anyone here has stayed there and could give recommendations on whether the Hotel is too far away from for example Soho to be practical.

I know that "too far away" is subjective but did you feel so?

I'd say it's not too far away at all. The subway system will take you anywhere you want go go in Manhattan in rapid fashion. Battery Park itself is an attraction, from there you can pick up the Staten Island Ferry or the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. You can also easily walk to South Street Seaport (ok, that's not really an attraction) or the Brooklyn Bridge. It's a longer walk to Soho or Chinatown, but no problem if you like to walk. Then there are taxicabs. I think in NY one sedan cab can accommodate four at a time, and there are some small van cabs too, which in some cases can be cheaper than four tickets the subway.

Definitely not! It's a great hotel, especially when they have those weekend deals.

If you can get a great rate there definitely go for it. Tourist sights are all over Manhattan - and no matter where you stay you'll be using the subway a lot. At least Battery Park City is somewhat residential - and much better for kids than Times Square.

Great place to stay, and since it's at the tip of Manhattan, most of the subway lines converge there. You're about 3 long blocks from the 1 train, 4 blocks from the 4,5 and R,W trains, and a few blocks more for the E train.

If you walk over to either the corner of Bridge & State Streets, or Morris & Greenwich Streets, you can catch the M6 to get to SoHo. But make sure you have either exact change in coins, or a metro card (which can be gotten most easily at the Bowling Green station in Battery Park, across the street from Citibank).

Of course, the concierge can also help you with a taxi in relatively short order, which is what would be easiest if you have really young children.

Lovely hotel. Good for interestating walk through Battery Park and going to Ellis Isand. You pass quite close to the Statue of Liberty. Great views from Ellis Island.
The number 1 train will take you to Times Square. It will also take you to Central Park, Ask for best route to Soho, If the weather is terribly use cab as much as possible. There are two less expensive restaurants a block north of the hotel toward the water that have Chinese and Japanese. We ate in the Chinese and it was ok with excellent service and amazing view of the Statue of Liberty. You might even go into the Museum of Living Memory (the Holocost). Some interesting exhibits (avoid the one about bullets). It is worth a walk-thru. Nice hotel.

I meant to tell you to be sure to go up to the bar at the RC - it's called Rise and the view of NY Harbor is spectacular. It is pricy and not the most kid friendly place, but if you go around 15 minutes before sunset, and have one drink and a glass of juice, stay for half an hour, I think you'll be pleased.

Thank you Elaine and mp. MP, husband's conference is at this hotel, so possibility exists we could meet him after his last meeting of the day and do this if we return in time before dinner. I did notice that Rise looks like it has a nice view. We might try to squeeze this in if we can, depending on the daytime schedule and the weather! Which brings up another issue--I had forgotten how iff-y the weather is in NYC in March...I have been there before and it was glorious, been there also and it was snowing! This will be an adventure for us either way.
