Riding the T with luggage
Thinking of staying overnight in downtown Boston; between 2 flights. I will have just [1] 20" roller bag.
I know I will need to:
Take the shuttle to Airport Station (Blue line).
Take the subway to State stop.
Switch to the Orange line.
Is this easily doable with the luggage?. It will be around 5 pm going to hotel and 8 am returning to airport.

DebitNM, Yesterday was the first day of a new shuttle bus from the airport to the Back Bay/Copley Square area. It costs $5 and stops at each terminal and at the Hynes Convention Center and the Copley T stop. Otherwise, you'll be fine on the T with your one bag. I see people all the time with roller bags.

Will the closing of Government Center Station impact her? That is the normal place to change from the Blue Line to the Green Line, and it will be closed for, what, two years?
I think it would help to know what you mean by "downtown." If you are going to Back Bay, te bus makes. Lot of sense. If you are going to the Financial District, the Blue Line to Aquarium or State works; if you are going to the rea near South Station, the Silver Line makes more sense. Etc.

For the Hyatt, you can take the Orange Line one stop from State St. to Downtown Crossing. For the Onyx, I guess Haymarket, Orange Line in the other direction, is the closest station.
There are many new restaurants near the Hyatt now. You'd have more of a walk to restaurants from the Onyx.

People carry luggage on the T all the time. It doesn't mean it will be convenient, but you won't be alone.
If you wind up choosing these hotels, take the Silver Line to South Station from the airport (it looks like a bus but they usually have luggage racks) to the Red Line. For Hyatt, get off at Downtown Crossing one stop on. It's about a block from the hotel. If you're a good walker, with a roller bag, you could get off at Charles St. for the Onyx, or you could use the Haymarket station, as suggested above, from the Blue/Orange Line option.

Can you do it? Sure. I find it a bit of a hassle myself and always take a cab.
If you wanted to take public transit and are staying at the Hyatt, I would actually take the Silver Line (basically a bus with some dedicated lanes) to South Station and walk from there. It is a bit of a longer walk (but under half a mile), but you don't have to mess with the shuttle or change lines.
Do you know any Boston-area Fodorites?
I actually live less than a mile from the Hyatt.

Yes. One block. After a switch and the hassle that entails. She can get to the front door with a cab if minimizing the walk is important.

Debit, unless someone was picking me up, I've always taken the T from the airport. It is no big deal. This is a town with a million students, and most of them use the T to get back & forth to the airport.
I've stayed at the Onyx twice, quite a few years ago. Easy walk from the station, though make sure you are pointed in the right direction!
since you will only be there one night, you might consider booking a res that can be cancelled last minute, then try using Price for one of the airport hotels right before you leave. You'll get either the Hyatt or the Hilton. It has been a year since I've done this, but last time it cost me $129. You can walk or shuttle to the terminal and T connections.

For some odd reason, the night in question is a pretty pricey night for the one going out. I will also be doing one on the return, I have already booked Hyatt Boston Harbor for that night, but they have no rooms on the outbound night.
I will also be looking for LMD on Kimpton or some Inner Circle special in the meantime.

We were in Boston about 6 years ago so things might have changed.
We stayed at the Harborside Inn. I don't remember much about the hotel but it was fine.
There was a T stop right outside the hotel. I don't know if most subway stations have an elevator but this one did.
We took it to the airport where a shuttle bus met the subway and made stops at each terminal.
The only thing I remember was that the shuttle bus didn't appear to be totally designed as an airport shuttle. While we had no problem with our luggage on the bus, the exit was a bit narrow so getting off with luggage was a bit of an adventure.
Overall, unless things have changed I would definitely do that subway to airport thing again.
