Renting a car in Phoenix

Does anyone have any information on the best place to rent a car in the Phoenix area. We will be there for two weeks in October and need something that will be big enough to hold our golf clubs. We are Canadian so our dollar does not go too far down in the US. Thanks for you help.

A couple of months ago I booked a car from Dollar Rental with a great rate for 2 weeks in June.

An Intrepid for $153/week.

Thanks for the information Kim. I was able to get that rate and it is a good one compared to the many I have tried.

Sandra have you been to travelocity.com to check rental rates? It's a very comprehensive resource in this regard.
Try to avoid sites off the airport lot.
The most convenient sites are Budget, National, Avis, Hertz, Dollar. (though I can't recall if Alamo or other second tier companies are on site. I think the travelocity site tells you though).

BTW the taxes at the PHX airport are OUTRAGEOUS! Be sure to factor this into your cost estimates.

This rate is better than travelocity including ALL the taxes and comes to 632.38 Cdn. funds. Now you can see why it is so expensive for us to travel in the US. US rate is 428.69 for two weeks.

One reason that car rental is so expensive is that taxes are so high (airport taxes on cars in Phoenix are over 10 %). The last time that I was in Phoenix, I rented a car from Advantage Rent-a-Car on Scottsdale Road, located next to the Fashion Mall. They picked me up from the airport and when I returned the car, they drove me back to the airport, without all of the hastle of my returning a car at the airport. And I saved the tax, as well as getting a great rate. Also, remember that if one qualifies to join AARP and gets a rate from Avis, they will reduce the price about 20 % from their best rate for AARP members.
