Depends on what you want to do. I would rent a car for either one or two days only. There are plenty of rental places in Waikiki where you jsut gett a car for a day. The rates are pretty close to what you would get at the airport (I think) and you don't have to worry about parking at the hotel.
I just returneda couple weeks ago. We were there for 4 days as well. We rented a convertible for one day and drove up to the North Shore and down the eastern past of the island. The other days we just hung around Waikiki, the pool, and the beach. We also took the bus to Diamond Head and did that hike up.

If you are going to stay in Waikiki area you can walk to beach and many restaurants in diffrent price ranges.
However if you want to see the North shore of Oahu or Hanama Bay you can get their much quicker by car.
But almost on every corner you will find advertisements for cheap rental cars by the day...( except on weekends). One thing to remember...most hotels charge anywhere from $ 7 to $ 15 a night to park your car...So if your not using it..you just gave up some spending money. Any other questions let me know..Been to Oahu too many times to even remember...

We didn't rent our car until the day we were exploring beyond the reach of a reasonable bus trip. We easily rented at a place in Waikiki. We never paid for parking because we turned it in at the end of the day.

I would rent a car and drive to the North Shore of Oahu. This is where the famous surf spot Pipeline is. The drive is pretty and scenery much different from Waikiki. There is a beautiful park called?Waimai Falls worth seeing. I personally think the more remote places in Hawaii are nicer. Enjoy.
