Reasonable place to stay in/near Milwaukee in September

My wife and I are taking a trip to Milwaukee the weekend of September 13th thru the 16th. A couple of the things we want to do is go to a Brewers game and visit the Miller Brewing company. Can anyone suggest a place to stay located near one or both of those attractions? We are also looking for recommendations on places to eat and other things to see & do while we are in Milwaukee. Thanks.

The closest hotel to Miller Park is probably the BW Woods View, but the woods refers not to a forest, but to the VA hospital. I wouldn't recommend the hotel or the location.

There are several nice B&Bs not too far from Miller Brewing: Brumder Mansion, Acanthus Inn, and Kilbourn Guest House. The Ambassador Hotel has been beautifully restored to it's Art Deco glory, and is nearby. Other than that, I'd suggest staying downtown.

Recommendations for restaurants are difficult without knowing what types of cuisine you like and how much you want to spend.

Milwaukee is pretty compact, tho there is some seemingly endless roadwork in the downtown area that tends to gum up traffic. What kind of accomodations do you like? You can usually get rooms in the downtown hotels (Hilton, Hyatt) for about $70 on priceline. We are planning to stay at the Ambassador, a restored art deco hotel on Wisconsin Avenue that is actually nearer Miller Park and which we got on Priceline. If you like B&Bs, there is a nice one called the Brumder Mansion further west on Wisconsin.

In addition to the Miller Brewery, the Lakeside Brewery is popular for tours. Also be sure to go to the Milwaukee Art Museum, on the lakefront, with the famous retracting roof. Many nice restaurants, particularly in the historic Third Ward, the converted warehouse district south of downtown.

I wouldn't stay too far west on Wisconsin Ave. You get into a not very nice part of town.

The Ambassador Hotel looks beautiful, I wouldn't walk around that area at night. East of the expressway is much better, and totally safe at night.

You could stay downtown, and the drive to Miller Park would be about 15 minutes - 30 on a game day.

You can rent a bike (that seats 2-6) at the lakefront & tool around for an hour or so. Also, don't pass up the Art museum! Try Cafe Lulu's in Bay View for a little out of the way lunch (and rhubarb pie!). Bay View also has some fun little shops on Kinnickinick Ave, and is 5 minutes from downtown.

Bay View and Walkers Point have been my hang outs for 15+ years. Why drive all the way to Brady Street, have nowhere to park and pay more?
Across the street from Lulu is Babe's Ice Cream, Riveria Maya (great, authentic Mexican) and a fantastic locally owned book store.

Thank you everyone for your advice. Is the Ambassador Hotel in the not so nice part of Wisconsin avenue, angethereader? Can you recommend any hotels in the downtown area? Can anyone else recommend a hotel in the downtown area or would it be better to stay near Miller Park and the Miller Brewing Company?

I'd stay downtown, unless you're on a budget. If you are the airport or the western suburbs (say Brookfield) should have deals.
Make sure the reservation site has a map and be sure to be east of I-94. Then you're sure to be in a safer area.
If you're downtown, the restaurants choices are numerous.
Let me know where you end up reserving and what you like and I can give you some direction.
Will you have a car?

Although I wouldn't stroll the area around the Ambassador alone in the middle of the night, I have certainly walked to/from my car in the evening when I've gone to restuarants or the theater near there without feeling uncomfortable.

If you don't want to stay in that area, I'd suggest downtown. Nice hotels there incluse the InterContinental, Hyatt, Hilton, Pfister, Metro.

A co-worker of mine who is originally from Wisconsin recommended the Radisson Milwaukee North Shore. Can anyone else recommend it or not recommend it?

It's been a hotel for a long time, a Radisson for a short time. It's five minutes from my house, and I was at a seminar there today. It's an OK hotel, but I wouldn't recommend the location for the things you want to see.

It's about 10 miles north of downtown, and to get to either Miller Park or Miller Brewery, you'd have to go south to DT and then west.

The Ambassador is not too far west of the Marquette campus. The neighborhood is improving, but it is not the downtown commercial center. Twenty years ago it was Dahmer's stomping grounds. The hotel has been recently restored. Hotel Metro is a great option east of the river. Brookfield has some reasonably priced options on Moorland road, just off the freeway, 10 minutes from Miller Park, and 15 minutes from downtown. For food west of downtown, try Miss Katie's Diner for great comfort food, Gilles for burgers and frozen custard, Balistreri's for pizza, and for the upscale meals try Eddie Martini's, Bjonda, Mr. B's in Brookfield.

I thought about Brookfield as an option. Any specific recommendations for hotels in Brookfield?

All the hotels out that way (as far as I can tell) are pretty standard. Marriott Garden, La Quinta, etc.

We often stay in the Brookfield area when we are in Milwaukee. It is close to I94 so it is quick and easy to get to Miller Park, the zoo and even downtown is an easy trip. You might want to check out this web site. http://www.brookfieldcvb.com/hotels/index_map.asp
We call around to the chains for the best rate and that is where we stay. There is a lot of shopping as well as casual restaurants in the area that make it a very convenient place to stay.

In a choice between Downtown and Brookfield, I'd pick DT. Brookfield is a suburb, but you wouldn't be in any of the nice residential areas, but near a mall and strip shopping centers, on a very busy street. If it matters to you, there'd be no place to walk.

Thank you everyone for your advice including the advice on Brookfield. After much research and consideration, I decided to book a room at the Country Inn & Suites in Brookfield. I read nothing but good reviews and it is conveniently located to Miller Park & Miller Brewing Company and is not a long drive to downtown.

I hope you enjpoy your stay.

To help with you activity planning, DT is about 20 minutes away in low traffic times, 30 minutes (or more) during rush hour.

You'll be close to the zoo. I'd stop by, it's one of the best in the country.
