Going to NY for a girls weekend in August -- 4 adult women and a 12-year-old girl. We're meeting a relative for dinner on the Sunday night, at Tao uptown (58th and Madison), and we might like to go somewhere more conducive to conversation after dinner. Do you know of anyplace pretty and a little special where the grown-ups might have a drink but they'd allow a 12-year-old?

starrs, have you been to The View lately? It seems every time I go, there is less and less city view as it is now surrounded by buildings higher than it is!
For a rooftop experience the new Hyatt Times Square on 45th between 6th and 7th has a wonderful view from the 52nd floor, including an outdoor terrace with seating. You can see the new World Trade Tower from there, not to mention spectacular views in most directions. Drinks and apps aren't cheap, but like most similar places, you are paying for the view and the gorgeous trendy atmosphere.

I'm trying to remember if teens were allowed in the View because the "lounge" part is a segment/ring of the restaurant. In any case, call to check but if it's a bar and not a restaurant the minor will not be allowed.

I think MomDD has been there fairly recently and I'll send a note to ask her thoughts.

The new Hyatt is a good idea because I hear it's very nice and it's close to our own hotel for easier walking home afterwards.

semon, I can't tell if you're kidding but I hope you realize it's only the adults that will be having a drink. The kid will have to make do with soda or something.

We were at the View Nov 2012 and there were a lot of children up there with their parents.

I emailed the concierge at the Hyatt asking if there was an age restriction at their rooftop bar and they emailed back telling me the drinking age (21) but that's not really what I was asking, so I've emailed again with a clearer question.

Well, here's verbatim the response I got back from The View Lounge at the Marriott Marquis:

"Children are welcome in the lounge as long as they are accompanied by an adult, the age limit is 21 years to come to the lounge."

Confusing or what? I don't understand why people can't answer this very simple question. I think she may mean the kid can come but can't drink. Or maybe she meant the kid can come to the View Restaurant but not the Lounge. I've asked for clarification.

The kid can come to the lounge with an adult.
The drinking age is 21.
Anyone on their own must be 21.

Fine! So that seems like a great place to have a drink after dinner. Thanks, Starrs!

Goddesstogo we are doing a girls' only trip to NYC in August as well! There are 7 of us - 5 old-er ladies (moms and a grandma) and a 24, 18 and 16 year old. Where are you staying? We have a reservation but are finding it hard rooms with 2 double beds at a decent place for a decent price the last week of August. Very exciting to plan - I love NYC!

We're staying at the NY Hilton at 6th and 54th. I'm doing it on points so I felt I could spend a bit more. Plus, I wanted the guest of honour (the 12 year old) to have the experience of a big hotel.

I was originally hoping for connecting rooms but it proved impossible to get two rooms with two doubles in each. It was always a king and two doubles. Also, I noticed that some of the rooms with two beds had singles, not doubles.

Where's your current reservation? And if you don't mind saying, what's your budget?

I'd love to hear some of your other plans too!

gtg, I love that Hilton. I especially like the little deli out the side door, across the street on 53th. When we had "girls trips", we'd stop there after a long day of sight seeing and pick up snacks, drinks and deli sandwiches for dinner. We'd have a picnic in the room, rest for a while and then head out to a Broadway show. When I think about returning to the city, their egg salad sandwich is one of the first things I think about. If you are using points, ask to see if you can have access to the club floor. It used to be on a high floor with a view of Central Park. They moved the free breakfast area to the lobby level. I don't know where it is now, but changes are good you'll have access to the HHonors breakfast. Ask at check in. But use the little deli off the side street for snacks, drinks and something for breakfast if you don't have club access. Enjoy!

I'm so glad to hear that, starrs. My sister has stayed there too and she also mentioned a little deli, so maybe it's the same one. I don't think our room includes breakfast but when I confirm our reservation with the hotel closer to the date, I'm going to see if they'll put us on the club floor. If not, I'll ask again at check in. And breakfast in the deli is just fine with me!

I love the idea of coming back to the room with snacks and junk. That's one of the best parts of staying in a hotel!

I'm not sure there's seating in the deli. It's more of a shop with a salad bar in the middle (or there was), two walls of drinks, etc. in coolers and the third wall is the deli counter. There may be tables outside but we always loaded up and took stuff back to the room. Some people hate eating in the room but we loved those picnics. We'd be back in the room around 4 or 4:30, a couple of us would stop at the deli for the food and drinks, we'd go up and stretch out, nap or read, alternate taking baths/showers and then ready to leave by 7 to head to the shows and wander Times Square for a little bit. Honestly, my very favorite way to "do" NYC. We'd eat a nice lunch but I always ended up hating the rush or fear dinner would make us late for the show. A few years ago, I was there in a Priceline room watching the Tonys on TV while they were happening a couple of blocks away - and watched several actors I'd watched that week in plays win awards (eating a picnic from the deli). Good memories.

That's exactly what I like to do. I hate to have to rush out for dinner. I'd rather have a late-ish lunch and a later dinner with time to plank out in the room in the late afternoon.

I'm sure we'll find a handy place for breakfast, if not in the hotel.

Hi again Goddess - we are currently booked at the Roger in 3 rooms, each with 2 double beds not connecting but hoping for adjoining or at least on same floor. We are paying about 280 per night per room taxes included.

I found that the prices were sky-high for the end of August - of course that could be because we will be there close to Labour Day.

I have stayed at the Blakely and the Palace before and liked them both, but the Blakely is a little too dark for my moher who likes bright spaces, and the Palace quite a bit pricier on that date. My first thought was the Loews Regency but they have raised their prices since their reno. I am still looking......
