Overnight between Denver and Yellowstone?
I want to break up the long drive from the Denver Airport to Yellowstone NP by spending the night in an interesting town (not Boulder--I'll be there at the end of the trip). Any recommendations for a location 3 hours north of Denver?
Alternatively, I could fly into Salt Lake City and drive to Yellowstone from there, but I think it's still too long a drive for one day for me.

Really, there's not much of huge interest between Denver & Yellowstone, and most towns are quite small, except cities that are closer to your beginning and end points. Cheyenne, WY is about 2 hours north of Denver; Cody (which has the very interesting Buffalo Bill Museum) is about 7 hours; and Casper is about 4 hours. I don't think I would call Cheyenne or Casper interesting, but I don't know what you would find to be interesting.
We're taking our second vacation from Denver to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks this summer. As we're intially staying in Grand Teton, our route may be a little different from yours. But our plans are to drive 4 hours and stay overnight in Rawlins, not interesting at all, but there will be a pool for our kids. The next morning, we'll have another 4 hours to get to Jackson, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park.

Here is my 2¢ worth... Drive I25 to I90 You could spend the night in Buffalo or Sheridan. We have stayed in both, not the most interesting but interesting in their own way... Take US-14/14A across the Bighorn Mountains and take the mile or so hike to the Medicine Wheel. Then on to Cody and YS.

I usually stay in Thermopolis, WY. It's not halfway, but the drive is not horribly long (leaves you with about 2 hours to Yellowstone in the a.m.), and the scenery is very nice. Plus, the thermal area there is very interesting.

We have been thru Saratoga several times after driving across Snowy Range Pass on 130 or Cameron Pass on 14 going north but don't remember much of any place to stay there. Then again we were not really looking... If you go that way and find something worthwhile let us know for future reference

We have driven from Salt Lake to Jackson, WY several times. It's about 300 miles. From Denver it's a little more than 500 miles. It's your call but by flying to SLC you would save over 400 miles of driving.
I used Jackson but the mileage to Yellowstone will be a little more. But, you should visit Jackson Hole even if you don't drive up from SLC.
