On Maui. Go Molokai or Lanai - is it worth it?
Is is worth taking a day trip to either Molokai or Lanai from Maui or to both (on separate days)? We will only be on Maui (Kanaapali) for 6 days during New Year's and the following week. Should we go? and if we do, what are the highlights of either island? Thank you!

I've only been to Molokai, but would vote to stay on Maui. We just drove around for the day and looked at scenery, which was beautiful, don't get me wrong, but if I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn't have done it.
Plus ferry ride back in the afternoon was wild ~~ take your drugs or amp;

One of our best experiences while on Maui was to fly out of Kapalua to Molokai and take the mule ride down to Kaulapapa. That is the site of the leper colony which has been there since the 1800's. I had read about Kaulapapa before he trip but I wished that I had read in more detail and then I would have looked for the sites mentioned in the books. Regardless, it was very informative and touching. As beautiful as it is there, a a gilded cage is still a cage. Of course the residents are free to come and go, having been "paroled" in the 1980's but knowing that there are 7000 unmarked graves there is a very emotional thing.
