Oahu was fantastic, on to Maui HELP!

You all were so helpful in making our trip to Oahu great. One of the best tips I got was what street to turn down so we could find an easy access to the parking garage. Looking for help again. We decided On Maui, Sept. 2004. I don't know anything about it. I know where to find websites, but the information I get here is often better. To give an idea in what we did in Oahu, stayed at The Park Shore Waikiki, was at the end of the strip, just close enough to Waikiki but far enough away from the crowds. Looking for the same thing. We didn't do much but tour the island and relaxed, left time table at home. Like to have walking distance to shops, restaurants etc.. Wil have a car, but sometimes it's nice to walk. So.. could you please start shooting ideas to me? Thanks.

I would do a search on "Kaanapali" on this website. That's a start if you want to be within walking distance to stores and nightlife. We stayed north of Kaanapali and had to drive to most activities. Lahaina is another choice town but its more congested and the beaches aren't as good.
I'm sure you will have many responses to your question. Keep reading!

Lahaina by car is very close to Kaanapali (@ 10mins)...You could walk it I suppose, but thinking back on the drive, it seems like a long walk. While Lahaina is a very touristy town, there are many food options. Along Kaanapali w/in walking distance of almost any of the hotels is Whalers Vill. w/shopping & some food options.

To be able to walk to a number of shops/restaurants you have to be in either a resort Kaanapali/Wailea or town Lahaina/Kihei. There are both at Kapalua but unless you are staying at the bay hotel the walking could be rugged with the hills.

September is the best time to visit Maui. It is not crowded so Kaanapali would probably be your best bet. You can walk to Whalers Village and hop a shuttle down to Lahaina for $1.00 each way. Lahaina has every kind of kitchy shop you can imagine along with some lovely galleries and museums.

What is your hotel budget? Starwood has the Westin Maui and the Sheraton. Both very nice hotels. You can join Starwood Preferred Guest and get 35% off rack rate for these rooms. They have some great special around September too. The Hyatt and Mariott are on this beachway too. There are also two condo properties. One is the Whaler and the other is the Alii. Both are very nice. You can check these out on vrbo.com Kapalua might just a bit to far north for you if you like to be close to the shops. VERY quiet up there, but very peaceful too. Kaanapali has restaurants from Macdonald's up to $$$$. Wailea is very upscale and has one mall. It is very arrid down there. It's very quiet down there also. Hotels down there are quite expensive.
