This is weird but I want to go to NYC see the art/ maybe a show/ eat. But I get so nervous/anxious around tall buildings. My plan is to find a neighborhood that would have less tall buidlings and I could stay in a hotel that is less than 20 (30)(10) stories high.

and so? You want a reco of where to stay? The village has more low buildings. The Washington Square hotel is the only proper hotel there. Can't remember how many floors. washigntonsquarehotel.com

I don;t understand - are you afraid to go up in tall buildings? Or are you just afraid near them - that is - that they might fall on you or something?

This makes a big diffrence. You can certainly find a number of hotels that are not highrises. And you can ask to stay on a low floor. And most restaurants are on street level. But- some theaters are IN tall buildings - although on the ground floors. And the entire Times Square area - as well as most of Manhattan is full of tall buildings (30, 40 stories and up).

How tall is too tall? If you want only 5/6 story buldings you will do best staying in the village. But - to go anywhere else - and even residential areas you will be in places with many 20+ story buildings.

(I live in a residential area on the upper west side and our building is only 12 stories. On the sidestreets there are many brownstones/ prewar buildings that are only 5/6 stories - but on the avenues many buildings are 20 stories plus.)

You really can't visit New York and avoid seeing/being among lots of very tall buildings.

If even walking down a sidewalk with tall buildings surrounding you will be a problem, I don't think you'll be able to enjoy NYC.
