nyc advice needed?

hi,
i need some info on hotels/tours
in NYC for a family of 4 adults.

1. Can anyone recommend a good, safe
hotel in NYC close to tour busses and
walking dist. to groceries that offers complim. breakfast and is within the $80-110 per night range in August?

2. I'd like to visit the Statue of Liberty,
are the double decker buses going there?

3. are there any cruises like the Chicago
architectural river cruise that go through
the marvelous buildings and give narrated
guides?

4. Are there any areas I should stay away
from?

5. What is the best means to see all the
top attractions, via double-decker busses?
I don't like to drive in a big city and
am averse to subways.

Thanks for any tips!!

Your budget will be tough to stick to if you want to be really close to where all the tour buses are, in midtown.

You might try visiting www.newyork.citysearch.com to do some homework that might help you make some decisions. Also search for Bed and Breakfasts in NYC on Yahoo, there are a few that fall around your price range.

You're going to have a real tough time finding a place that meets your criteria! (Even tougher if you mean $80-110 for a room for four!) If you find something it probably won't be in mid-Manhattan where the doubledecker buses are.
As for going to the Statue of Liberty, taking your comment literally, it's impossible to get there by bus, since it's on an island! Actually, the best way to get there is to take the subway to Battery Park and get the boat from there. (Don't be afraid of the subways!)And, go early to Battery Park, as the lines get long as the day progesses.
Also, your comment about Chicago cruises is confusing. I don't believe the boat goes through the buildings! In New York, there is a wonderful Circle Line cruise that goes around Manhattan island. Defintely take it.

Pati, first welcome to our wonderful city and I really hope you have a great time.

As the other posters have mentioned your "budget" is going to be hard to keep to in the city, most of the nicer hotels are already booked and the price for a hotel room generally runs more than that. That said, here are some suggestions.

Try the Howard Johnson on Park Ave and 30th St. Sometimes they have special discounted rooms. The rooms are small but nicely done. Also try the Days' Inn and Quality Inn (Lexington & 31st)
Both chains have more than one location in the city and usually offer good rates.

The "tour buses" you are talking about start off at the Empire State Building, and yup the double decker buses run all day and evening with tour guides to give you info and history of the city.

The South St. Seaport is alot of fun and there are several good restaurants to try. One of my favs is the "Bridge Cafe" right under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The subways are very safe these days and will get you anywhere you need to go. YOu can get "metro passes" that are good for both the bus and subway and you can get a weekly pass for $17 which gives you unlimited rides for a week. Or a daily pass for $4.50.

Hope you have a great time and if you need any more info, please let me know.

Try www.broadwayinn.com for bed and breakfast-type hotel.
